Masters of Sex star Michael Sheen may date lots of incredible women, but he is not dating costar Lizzy Caplan. (No matter how much we want him to, especially since Caplan's Masters of Sex character Virginia Johnson is such an open and sexual woman.) In real life, Caplan keeps mum on her personal life. And that just makes her all the more awesome.
I absolutely love that there isn't much about Caplan's love life when you look into it. In this day and age, celebrities have to very actively keep their private life private because paparazzi and news sources are always mining for information. I realize this is slightly hypocritical as I write about the stuff, but I can't imagine dealing with all the ups and downs of a relationship, and then having those ups and downs (real or not) documented for all to read about. Caplan's silence is admirable and classy.
For example, it took the media a year and a half to discover that her relationship since 2006 with Friends star Matthew Perry had ended. Can you imagine not having anyone leak that to the media for that long? When you think about how much gossip surrounds another Friends alum Jennifer Aniston, it's amazing how little we know about Caplan and Perry. Or maybe people don't care as much about Perry and Caplan's love life, but I just can't believe that. They are two funny and charismatic people who have been involved in some iconic shows throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
Turns out people do care about them. Caplan just won't be pressured into giving any information about her relationships. Caplan gave a fabulous interview to Jeff Mayesh of The Independent in October 2013. Here's just a snippet of her awesomeness when Mayesh asked her about Perry:
Caplan will not even entertain any questions relating to her partner. When I mention his name, she cocks a hand to her ear and feigns deafness, until I change direction. She is proud of her anonymity: "I can stand right next to paparazzi," she boasts, "and I do that sometimes. I'm close with people who are far more famous, and they know how to avoid attention."
OMG I love her. I love that she doesn't want her personal life to define her roles, and then she also can speak so eloquently and compassionately about the sexual revolution. I love that she's so open with her body in her roles on TV shows like Masters of Sex and True Blood, but her personal life is not for our entertainment.
Now, we're not surprised at how smart Caplan is. She has been involved in some of the great modern cult classics like Mean Girls, Hot Tub Time Machine (it's better than you think it is), Party Down, and Freaks and Geeks — just to name a few. About her previous career choices she said, "I have a special ability to spot TV shows that don't go past two seasons, that's my gift."
Even though the shows she chooses may not always last long, they are beloved for their intelligent, humorous, and realistic (and sometimes real-life) portrayals of people. I usually pick my favorite actors by the shows and movies they choose. And Lizzy's resume is pretty rocking. Of course, it's not perfect, but they don't call 'em struggling actors for nothing. But with Masters of Sex, Caplan is safe from the two-season curse. This show isn't going anywhere and her recent Emmy nomination certainly doesn't hurt.
So, we don't know who one of the coolest women in Hollywood is dating. And she'd like to keep it that way, thank you very much.
P.S. Heyyyy, Lizzy. Sorry for writing an article about your personal life. I know it's a conflicting thing to do when I so passionately applaud the fact that you don't talk about it. Please forgive me and maybe one day we can be friends.
