'The Giver' Casts Meryl Streep: What Questions Do We Have About the Film's Casting?
In best news ever news, it looks like Meryl Streep will be joining the cast of the recently green-lit adaption of the Lois Lowry YA novel The Giver. Streep will be playing the role of the Chief Elder in the dystopian society that the main character, Jonas, lives in. While we couldn't be more excited that Streep is taking on the beloved novel's adaption as her newest project, we still have plenty of questions for the casting of the film.
Is Alexander Skarsgard Too Young/Hot to Play Jonas' Father?
True Blood fans may be seeing their badass vampire crush in a much different role. According to reports, Skarsgard is up for the role of Jonas' father. Now, I read the book about a thousand times as a kid, and the last thing that I thought was about how hot Jonas' father should be in the film version. Yet Skarsgard is unbelievably attractive. In a world where attractiveness doesn't matter (the people in the town are stripped of all emotion, including attraction) could his DILF-status be a distraction for the audience? (It will for this viewer). Of course the other, far less shallow question is, is Skarsgard simply too young to be believable as a father?
Is Brenton Thwaites Too Old to play Jonas?
In the film version of The Giver, the role of the innocent 11-year-old protagonist, Jonas, will be played by Austrailan actor Brenton Thwaites. Thwaites -- whom has starred in Lifetime's Blue Lagoon: The Awakening and the upcoming film Maleficent -- is a good choice for the role in the sense that he is relatively unknown in the United States. However, many people were upset by his age -- Thwaites is 23! We know that many actors portray younger characters (some for years and years) but this is definitely a coming-of-age story... will Thwaites appear too old to be believable?
Will Cameron Monaghan Leave 'Shameless' To Portray Asher in 'The Giver'?
According to reports, Shameless actor Cameron Monaghan -- who portrays Ian Gallagher -- will play Jonas' goofy best friend Asher in the movie. The Giver begins filming in just eight weeks in South Africa -- just when Shameless is set to begin filming. Will there be a scheduling conflict with The Giver and the Showtime show?
Is Jeff Bridges the Perfect Choice to Play The Giver?
Rhetorical question, because the answer is a resounding yes. Just like we couldn't imagine The Big Lebowski without The Dude, we now can't imagine an adaption of The Giver without Bridges. Not only does Bridges fit the physicality of The Giver, but the actor's passion for the project is what got it made in the first place. Bridges had been shipping the film around for over a decade before it landed at The Weinstein Co. and Walden Media. Though originally Bridges wanted The Giver as a vehicle for his father, it wasn't too long before it was Bridges himself slated in the role.
Who Will Play The Giver's Daughter?
The Giver's daughter, Rosemary, was the original Receiver of Memory -- the role that Jonas is given in the novel. Rosemary couldn't take the pain of the horrible memories from the past and asked to be released from society. Though Rosemary isn't a character in the novel, a film version should definitely use her in The Giver's many visual memories. Our pick for who could portray Rosemary? Brenton Thwaites' Maleficent co-star Elle Fanning. Something about that girl just seems so haunted, you know?
How Many Awards Will Meryl Streep Be Nominated For For Her Role in 'The Giver'?
Well, just how many awards can one be nominated for? Because the answer is... all of those.
