Check Out Snippets of Jessie J's New Single!

by Alex Kritselis

This week, a few different snippets of Jessie J's upcoming single, "Bang Bang," which features Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, appeared online. The song sounds like it could be a banger, but, because I'm a worrier by nature, I do have one small reservation. As you may recall, Jessie J hasn't had a hit in the United States since 2011's "Domino" (a song that I'm listening to almost daily), so I think she's really counting on "Bang Bang" to blow up big. My one minor reservation aside (which we'll get to in just a second), it seems as though she's taken all of the right steps to make that happen.

First, Jessie enlisted the help of Grande and Minaj. How did a struggling artist who hasn't put out an album in the United States in over three years convince our "It Girl" of the moment AND one of our most popular rappers to appear on her comeback single? I have no idea. I suspect lots of money and possibly hypnosis were involved. The point is, it's happening, and Grande and Minaj's proven track record of radio success will definitely help "Bang Bang's" chances of becoming a hit. Second, according to MyPinkFriday.com, the song was crafted by Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, and Ilya. These are major pop producers who, again, have a proven track record of success (Grande's current smash, "Problem," for example). Okay, let's listen to the snippets!

Last weekend, Jessie teased what sounds like it could be "Bang Bang's" chorus during a concert (special thanks to Instagram user isthataimeebeth for the video!):

Okay, that doesn't tell us much. In fact, I can't even understand what she's singing. "Bang bang into the room, I know you want it"? "Bang bang into the room, I got some llamas"? I hope it's "llamas." Let's move on.

On Wednesday, Republic Records posted this brief instrumental clip of the track to Instagram:

It sounds like "Bang Bang" has a little retro flair to it, much like "Problem"! I like that. But here's where I start to get a little worried...

Also on Wednesday, Jessie posted this 15-second preview of the song to Instagram:

"She got a body like an hour glass, but I can give it to you all the time/ She got a booty like a Cadillac, but I can send you into overdrive..."

I love the lyrics, but doesn't Jessie sound a bit, um, shrill here? Additionally, I've said it before and I'll say it again — Jessie has a bad habit of over-singing sometimes, and in my opinion, it can be kind of annoying. While she doesn't necessarily overdo it during this clip, I feel like the potential for it to happen is there. I don't think people are super into Jessie's out of control vocal acrobatics (just a hunch), so I hope she's able to tone it down a little bit on "Bang Bang."

That being said, these are just very short snippets — the finished product could end up totally surprising me! Unfortunately, we still have to wait 18 more days to hear the track. Mark your calendars: "Bang Bang" premieres worldwide on July 29.
