On any occasion, seeing Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly together would probably be a little confusing. At the crack of dawn, it's just plain strange. Hopefully you were able to wake up and move past the random pairing, because Kaling and Daly joined forces for a very important cause: announcing the 2014 Emmy nominees. Bright and early on Thursday morning, The Mindy Project star and TV host finally revealed the nominees for a year that was bound to deliver at least a few surprises. In fact, the 2014 awards ceremony itself is pretty surprising, since the Emmys will air on August 25, a Monday night, rather than the usual Sunday.
But if the nominations proved anything, it's that you're going to want to watch the Emmys this year, no matter what day it's on. It had already been announced that True Detective would compete for the Outstanding Drama Series prize rather than Outstanding Miniseries, seriously shaking up an already competitive category, while Orange Is the New Black was submitted for Outstanding Comedy Series.
There are always at least a few surprises and a ton of snubs among the nominees, so the addition of these series, as well as a few other category changes, ensured 2014 would be a memorable year for the Emmys. Don't believe me? Check out the full list of 2014 Emmy nominees below to see just how exciting this year's race will be.
