Lady Gaga turned up for a surprise appearance at Montreal's Jazz Festival (July 1) to croon with her pal Tony Bennett. Those two are so close, since Mr. Bennett actually sketched Gaga while totally nude as part of her Vanity Fair cover story back in 2011 and they have a joint album coming out sometime this year. Gaga showed up to the event looking like a princess-y version of fashion icon Bianca Jagger, channeling '70s chic, which is such a thing lately, as evidenced by Haim and their fashions inspired by that era.
No, it's not Coachella or Glastonbury or SXSW. Thankfully, it's not the latter, which means no vomit-as-performance-art, which I call BS on. Even though I love me some Mommy Monster, puke slash bulimia-glamorization ain't pretty nor is it art just because you call it that. But this appearance is still Gaga being unexpected, performing with a classic crooner at a more mature event while wearing an ensemble to die for.
Gaga wore a statement cape and a white, strapless dress, with her hair pushed back with a bejeweled headband. Come to think of it, she reminds me of fictional character as well, but more on that in a sec.
Gaga has been trending normal lately with some of her looks, just as Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj have, ditching the wigs and the outrageous costumes for things that are more common and copyable. But I don't think Gaga is going to keep this trend up for the long term.
She lives and dies by her neckbreaker heels. The Mother Monster probably has bone spurs and hammertoes, but who cares. Those heels are her weapons and she won't tone those done.
Is Gaga going for Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz with this ensemble? Maybe a little, at least from this view. I have that movie on the brain right now because I watched an anniversary showing at an arthouse theater last weekend and was totally blown away by my adult assessment of the characters and why I'd rather bro down with The Wicked Witch of the West over Dorothy Gale any day of the week.
On the flip, this view and vantage point is where Gaga truly summons the style spirit of Bianca Jagger, the former wife of one Mick. She is a true disco princess and looks like she is on her way to Studio 54. That's some serious bling and the contrast between her dark hair and fair clothing slays.
That's how you do extreme winged eyeliner and mega curled lashes, ladies.
