We've Found Your Fourth of July Anthem

Fear not: your Fourth of July party anthem has arrived! On Monday, The Saturdays released the music video for their new single, “What Are You Waiting For?” — and it’s going to make you absolutely lose your mind (in a good way). The Saturdays, a five-woman pop act from the United Kingdom, have been making music since 2008, and they’ve released some cute songs along the way, but nothing even comes close to the bold, euphoric, naughty-bits-to-the-wall, dance-pop goodness of “What Are You Waiting For?” Yeah, it’s that awesome.

If it sounds like I’m exaggerating, I promise you that I’m not. “What Are You Waiting For?” will make you feel like you’re jumping up and down on the beach with a lit sparkler in one hand and a giant margarita in the other. And also you’re eating a hot dog and a funnel cake. And there are fireworks going off in the background! And you just won a million dollars! And that hot guy from Orange Is the New Black is there in a swimsuit! AHHH!!!

The fact is, “What Are You Waiting For?” shouldn’t work, but it does. The lyrics are asinine and auto-tune has robbed the women’s voices of any distinguishing characteristics or personality. It’s like five beautiful robots got together and were programmed to sing the world’s most generic song about partying. But all of that’s OK, because sometimes, you just really need a generic song about partying! Despite its obvious shortcomings, “What Are You Waiting For?” is infused with so much explosive energy and fun, it’s basically impossible to resist. Watch the video below and see what you think. Drinking in the pool? Fist pumping on the beach? Dancing on a yacht? Hanging out on a rooftop? Snapping a couple sexy duck-face selfies? Having silly karaoke time with the girlz? Passing a herd of donkeys while crusin’ in your jeep?? This. Video. Has. It. All. I know I just talked smack about how bad the lyrics are, but some of them are so bad, they’re actually kinda good:

Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon

And baby when you think that you’ve had enough

We’ll take things a whole level up!

I am always interested in taking things “a whole level up.” That sounds amazing, if I’m being perfectly honest. But nothing can prepare you for this astonishingly brilliant bit right before the bridge:

Tonight we’re gonna party, party, party!

Wanna see everybody move their body, body, body!

‘Cause it’s the only way, gotta party, party, party!

Yeah everybody grab somebody, let’s get naughty, naughty!

I just— I don't even know what to say at this point. This song is everything. Rhyming “everybody” with “body, body, body”? Describing partying as "the only way"? Doubling up on the use of the word "naughty" for emphasis? Genius. This is my jam, this is my theme song, this is my ringtone (I know I joke about that a lot, but I’m actually NOT joking about it this time — this song is totally my ringtone).

“What Are You Waiting For?” was produced by the always-amazing production group, Xenomania (Kylie Minogue, Little Mix, Girls Aloud, etc.). I’ve run out of superlatives. Celebrate Independence Day this weekend with “What Are You Waiting For?” You’ll be so glad that you did.
