Cheryl Cole's New Single is Saxy
On Monday, British pop star Cheryl Cole dropped “Crazy Stupid Love,” the video for her new single, and it prominently features — you guessed it — the saxophone! First, we had Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty,” then, there was Ariana Grande’s “Problem,” and now, we've got Cole’s “Crazy Stupid Love”! The sax is having a serious moment in pop music right now, and I really couldn’t be more pleased.
For those of you who are not familiar, Cole got her start in 2002 as a part of the U.K. band Girls Aloud. When the group decided to take a hiatus in 2009, she struck out on her own. So far, Cole has released three studio albums as a solo act, and she's doing pretty well for herself!
“Crazy Stupid Love” is a catchy, up-tempo club track about falling head over heals for someone amazing. On the chorus, Cole sings:
Well, I don’t know how you do it to me
You make my brain just stop, sink my heart to my feet
It’s like a roller coaster, but I’m only going up
I’m in crazy, stupid love
And then you're treated to 15 seconds of absolute funky saxophone bliss. And then there’s another verse. But then there’s 15 more seconds of absolute funky saxophone bliss! I wish that the whole song were just that sax riff playing over and over again on repeat. I would be in heaven.
On its own, “Crazy Stupid Love” doesn’t leave much of a lasting impression. Sure, it’s a cute song, but it has nothing on Cole’s last lead single, the Calvin Harris-produced “Call My Name.” But the music video actually made me like the song a whole lot more.
I’m serious! Generally speaking, I’m not much for music videos, but the visual for “Crazy Stupid Love” is really appealing and fun. It’s super vibrant and colorful, and Cole looks totally stunning throughout. Plus, she busts out some impressive choreography during the chorus, and I'm pretty much always down to watch pop stars shake their butts. Admittedly, it would have been nice to have seen Cole don some black sunglasses and pretend to play the sax at some point during the video, but that's a relatively minor criticism (I'm kidding. Sort of.)
