What would the Internet do if two of their favorite actors were both in the same movie? Probably explode, especially if the rumor that Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch will be cast in Journey's End is true. As with the rumor that Hiddleston may be playing the Joker in Batman V. Superman, this news should be treated with caution, so don't let your hopes skyrocket too high. But if it ends up being the real deal, it would be too amazing for words.
Journey's End is originally a play about World War I and ahead of the war's 100th anniversary, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, sought the rights from Warner Bros. to turn it into a film. Reportedly, he told them "that the project is essential to Britain's commemorations of the anniversary." Producer Guy De Beaujeu said the project had been in the works for a year because obtaining the rights was so difficult. "We thought they had been lost forever," De Beaujeu lamented.
Fortunately, Prince Andrew's letter to Warner Bros. prompted them to look into where the rights stood. "They discovered that the rights had lapsed in 2008. Warner were not forced to give up the rights; they very kindly looked into them and found they did not hold them in the UK and Eire any longer," De Beaujeu said.
The rights were supposedly signed over to the UK film company on Monday, which now leaves the casting as the next step in the process. Though no official cast has yet been announced, De Beaujeu emphasized the necessity of getting a good group of people saying, "It's really important that we get the very best actors of their generation to take part. We want it to be as attractive to as many people as possible." If the rumors in the Sunday Times of Hiddleston and Cumberbatch being cast are true, it really will be the most attractive war movie in America and abroad.
Benedict Cumberbatch was the most reblogged actor on Tumblr in 2013, and Hiddleston was seventh on that list. In 2012, Hiddleston also landed the number three spot on Tumblr's top user-generated tags. In other words, the Internet loves CumberHiddles and everything hurts.
In addition to bringing in the fans (Tom Hiddleston has made voluntarily me watch more Shakespeare than I was forced to in high school), Cumberbatch and Hiddleston already have great World War I movie chemistry after starring in War Horse together three years ago.
2011 was a different time in the actors' careers, as both were still relatively unknown, so back then the fangirls didn't implode when they starred together. But now, it's a whole other ballgame and the idea of Hiddleston and Cumberbatch in the same film contributing to the revival of their country's history while dressed in period clothing?
Oh, and also rumored for the film? Other adorable brit Eddie Redmayne. I know I said at the beginning of this article not to get your hopes up, but it's too late for me. This perfect cast needs to happen ASAP.
