'TFIOS' Breaks Record Ahead of Release

by Lia Beck

The Fault in Our Stars hasn't even been released yet and it's already breaking records. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Fault in Our Stars is the top-selling love story for pre-sale tickets in Fandango's 14-year history. TFIOS is outpacing The Vow which opened to $41.2 million on Valentine's Day weekend in 2014. Fandango has not reported how many tickets they have sold for the film, just that it is ahead of where The Vow was at this point before it's release. The Fault in Our Stars opens on Friday, June 6 and according to pre-release tracking is expected to open to at least $30 million, so time will tell if it beats The Vow on that front as well.

TFIOS' high number of pre-sale tickets is no doubt related to the popularity of the book on which the film is based. In a Fandango survey of 1,000 people who purchased pre-sale tickets, a whopping 81 percent said they have read the book. Additionally, lead actress Shailene Woodley was a draw: nearly 65 percent of those surveyed said she influenced their decision to purchase a ticket.

You may be thinking, "Isn't there a bigger movie out there that should have this top spot? I feel like there's something missing." If so, you're on to something. As Variety points out, Fandango's ranking does not include the massively popular Twilight series as those films aren't in the "romantic drama" category but rather "fantasy romance."

It's possible The Fault in Our Stars could come in at number one out of all movies in the box office this weekend, but it has some fierce competition. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's action movie Edge of Tomorrow also comes out on Friday and Maleficent, which debuted with a $70 million North American opening last weekend will be back for round two.
