Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen: Matching at the Met

by Tyler Atwood

After a little time sitting quietly out of the spotlight working on their various fashion and beauty brands, the Olsen twins are on everyone’s mind again after their adorably hilarious interview on Ellen in April.

Last year, the notoriously boho duo struggled a bit with the “punk” theme of the Met Gala, hitting the carpet in an oversized poncho and fur-lined kimono. For the 2014 Gala, however, Mary-Kate and Ashley were much more on point with the super glamorous Charles James dress code.

The twins stepped out in color-coordinated coat dresses that harken back to a more classic era of fashion. On any other celebrities, the look might appear contrived or over-dramatic, but after years of distressed-chic looks and oversized ensembles, the pair's Met Ball looks are a breath of fresh air.

Mary-Kate looked elegant and contained in a golden-buttoned gown with a slight train. Her look was complemented perfectly with delicate drop earrings and a slicked-back ponytail. Ashley's ensemble was slightly more adventurous, and was comprised of a striped, belted black and white gown. Ashley finished off the look with a sparkling wreath necklace and a tousled updo. Perhaps the twins decided to coordinate their ensembles as a way to renew public interest in their label, The Row. Maybe the Olsens simply realized they hadn't tried a synchronized fashion statement in quite some time. But whatever the reason behind the choice, we approve.
