Chris Martin Continues to Sing His Feelings

by Kadeen Griffiths

Conceptually, not every song on Coldplay's upcoming Ghost Stories album can be about Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, right? There are three other guys in Coldplay, after all, who might want to bring something else to the table. However, the more Chris Martin opens up about his conscious uncoupling with Paltrow, the harder it gets not to read that kind of subtext into every single. Martin even admitted to blaming himself for the split when he finally spoke up about it and all of the singles from the album are way too relevant. Coldplay's latest song, "A Sky Full of Stars", features Avicii and is both something a little different and yet still more of the same.

"A Sky Full of Stars" is more upbeat than the previous official singles, half ballad and half EDM track with a melody that does nothing if not making you think of twinkling lights and a galaxy far, far away. (I'm not saying this song should be playing over the credits of Star Wars: Episode VII, but I'm saying J.J. Abrams should consider making that a thing.) The track is more upbeat likely because it deals with less longing or loss and more with the dynamic start of a relationship both in tone and content. However, since it's the second to last song on the Ghost Stories album chronologically, it feels like more of an indication that Martin, at least, is hopeful of either finding new love or reuniting with Paltrow one day.

"'Cause you're a sky full of stars. I'm going to give you my heart," the song opens over an electronic- and piano-based beat. "'Cause you're cause a sky full of stars and cause you light up the path."

Aww. Of course, it would be nice to objectively evaluate all of Coldplay's new songs without constantly having to reflect back on Martin and Paltrow, but even Martin himself admitted that Ghost Stories deals with their issues. By the time the album actually comes out, we're all basically going to end up listening to an approximately 42 minute long musical adaptation of the rise and fall of Paltrow and Martin's relationship.
