Another Day, Another Rumor

by Kadeen Griffiths

When Rita Ora's name comes up nowadays, it's usually in relation to men. The British pop singer is currently dating Calvin Harris, but her previous connection to Rob Kardashian had the world talking for a while — especially when Ora coolly claimed not to know who Kardashian was during an Australian radio interview in early April. Recently, Ora has also denied rumors that she ever hooked up with Jay Z and it appears another rumor has caught up with her. There was speculation in 2013 that Nick Jonas had written his song "What Do I Mean to You" about Ora and, while those rumors were true, the relationship between her and Jonas that the lyrics implied was not. Apparently, Nick Jonas was just joining the grand tradition of artists writing songs about people they'd never dated.

It's understandable. Not everyone can be the biggest celebrity player like Taylor Swift and have an abundance of teenage heartache to dip into every time they need inspiration for a new song. "What Do I Mean to You" was about a girl named Rita who had treated him badly and that made it the cause of immediate rumors because, after all, how many famous people named Rita could there possibly be? (Okay, how many famous people Rita that are around Nick Jonas' age? How many famous people named Rita that are around his age that he's actually met?)

"I read the lyric and I kind of messaged him and was like, ‘I have no idea where this came from. If you want to talk about it, call me,’” said Ora. "...he was like, ‘You know what, I just obviously didn’t put out how I felt across to you properly.’"

Considering that puts "What Do I Mean to You" on the same level as Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me", you'd think this would officially make Nick Jonas the male Swift despite the fact that both he and Ora are happily with other people now. However, contrary to popular belief, Swift has not now, nor will she probably ever, corner the market on writing songs about people breaking hearts intentionally or unintentionally.

"Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's, which is basically the tragic anthem for any couple separating to go away to university, was written about Delilah DiCrescenzo, a nationally ranked runner who already had a boyfriend when lead singer Tom Higgenson said he was going to write a song for her. At least Nick Jonas actually knew Ora instead of having just been introduced to her. Then again, the fact that he knew Ora so well actually makes it worse that he wrote a song about her breaking his heart without talking to her about it until after the song was done.

Luckily for Jonas, he and Ora still managed to remain friends, which is more than most of us would do in that same situation. Guys, just talk to your crushes. Communicating through the radio only works when Taylor Swift does it — and sometimes not even then.
