Nicki Minaj made jaws drop when she debuted a new look at the premiere of her upcoming movie The Other Woman. But it wasn't just because she looked absolutely stunning — it was because there was absolutely no trace of pink (or green or blue) on her face, hair, or ensemble.
Minaj arrived on the red carpet looking ultra-sophisticated dressed in a body-hugging, cream-colored knitted Alexander McQueen dress that was unlike anything we've ever seen on her. On top of wearing a conservative-looking gown, Minaj also decided to don a different beauty look — long, slick black hair and a demure face with natural-looking makeup. And while I miss The Harajuku Barbie's bold and crazy fashion and beauty, I have to say I am totally obsessed with the new Nicki Minaj.
While there isn't anything new or shocking about an off-white gown or naked-colored makeup palette, it still surprised Minaj's fans, which was the singer and rapper's plan all along . In an interview with MTV Style, Minaj said, "I went so far to the other side that there's only one place to go from there. You can either continue doing costumes or you can just say, 'Hey guess what? This will shock them even more. Doing nothing will shock them even more.'"
This is definitely a new beauty and fashion philosophy coming from someone who once lived by the mantra of "Color, color, color. When in doubt, add color. Then, add some more." But a close examination of Minaj's Instagram account will show that this transition to a more natural-looking self has been in the works for a while. She's been sharing selfies without any makeup or wigs for the last few months.
This change isn't coming out of nowhere, however. Minaj also told MTV that her new album will go back to her hip-hop roots, leaving her pop hits like "Super Bass" and "Starships" behind. If her musical transformation is as amazing as her physical one, I can't wait.
