Is He Already Over 'Fifty Shades of Grey'?

by Kadeen Griffiths

Admit it. One of the best parts of the Twilight franchise was watching interviews with the cast about the Twilight franchise. For actors who had the movie to thank for their mainstream popularity and most of their fortunes, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were notoriously disparaging about the plot. Pattinson in particular was asked by an interviewer if he took anything from the Twilight set after filming the last movie, and Pattinson responded with, "My dignity." Ouch. Fifty Shades of Grey was based off a Twilight fanfiction, which could be the reason why history might be repeating itself a bit here. The first movie hasn't even come out yet and Jamie Dornan, who plays Christian Grey, has already said he'd like to work on something that doesn't involve tying women to beds.

Clearly he's in the wrong line of work. Dornan was referring to the fact that he played an S&M-loving billionaire in the British series The Fall and is now playing Christian Grey, the kinky lead in a Fifty Shades of Grey, which had to be filmed in two versions — one explicit and one clean. If the movie does well, then Dornan will be doing a lot more knot tying since the book has two sequels following the adventures of Christian and his lady love Ana Steele. Going from one kinky role to another makes it pretty understandable that he'd want to try something new.

And yet Dornan also seemed surprised by the attention that the film is getting. "The whole thing's ridiculous," he said. "It's just all a bit silly the way it works. I think I could lose my mind."

Those comments also harken back to Robert Pattinson, whose biggest reason for signing on to Twilight was to get closer to Kristen Stewart and who found himself overwhelmed, confused, and occasionally terrified of the reaction he inspired in fans. Considering his fan base was the type who asked Pattinson to bite their babies, a little terror was to be expected. But Dornan's fan base might be the type who ask him to do things that shouldn't be said with a baby present, so it's a little early in the game to be wary.

Pattinson and Dornan also mirror one another by being in more or less in the same stage of their career. Before Twilight, Pattinson was mainly known by hardcore Harry Potter fans who remembered him as Cedric Diggory (or by casual Harry Potter fans who remembered him as the hot guy who died in the fourth movie). Before Fifty Shades of Grey, Dornan was mainly known by hardcore Once Upon a Time fans as Sheriff Graham (or by casual Once Upon a Time fans who remembered him as the hot guy who died in the first season).

If the Fifty Shades of Grey film is as huge a phenomenon as the books, is Dornan going to join Pattinson in needing a break from frame for a while? Only time will tell. At least Christian Grey will never get tired of tying women to beds.
