Read These 27 Celeb Tweets About Aleppo

by Morgan Brinlee

Images from inside Aleppo show a city utterly destroyed — its roads and buildings reduced to rubble as pro-government forces' push to retake the eastern part of the city from rebels. Scenes of widespread destruction and harrowing messages of hopelessness caught the attention and hearts of celebrities as efforts to evacuate civilians from rebel-held territories in eastern Aleppo got off to a shaky start Wednesday. As images and reports continued to pour out of Syria, many celebrities tweeted about Aleppo to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis.

Although a ceasefire deal brokered Tuesday appeared shaky Wednesday following reports of renewed shelling, evacuation efforts resumed Thursday, enabling aid organizations to assist civilians in fleeing rebel-held territories in the war-torn city's eastern neighborhoods. A statement released Thursday by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) claimed two evacuation operations had managed to take some 3,000 civilians and more than 40 wounded from eastern Aleppo, Reuters reported. According to opposition forces, one person was allegedly killed early Thursday and several others injured when pro-government forces reportedly fired on a convoy of evacuees led by the ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Cresent.
