Say Goodbye To This Late-Night Show

by Emma Goddard

After eight years as the host, Chelsea Handler is leaving Chelsea Lately calling it quits with the E! channel after her contract expires at the end of the year. I’d tell you to cue the cries of despair, but don’t worry, because the comedian isn’t planning on leaving TV forever. In fact, she wants to do something bigger and better.

Irving Azoff, Handler’s manager, made the statement to The Hollywood Reporter saying, “Chelsea intends to leave when her contract expires. She hired me to figure out her life after E! We have at least seven suitors and many ideas.” Of these so-called many ideas, Azoff said that a radio show or nightly or weekly late-night show on a different network could be in the works.

Although her leaving the network is somewhat disappointing, it should really come as no surprise as Handler has expressed her frustration with certain E! celebrities in the past. Handler has not only had her feud with Joan Rivers after she criticized her in an interview with Howard Stern, but has also had her fair share of comments against the Kardashians. “The girl made it on her back f—ing [Harbert], we all know that,” Rivers said in an interview with Stern. “She’s ordinary. She’s not genius.” On Stern’s show, Handler also stated that the network is “a sad, sad place to live” and that “They don’t know what they’re doing. They have no ideas. It’s a failure.”

Chandler also recently interviewed with friend and actress Gwyneth Paltrow, saying, “I actually like Khloe and she is really, really sweet. [But I’m] not a huge fan of the other one.” Although there are several other Kardashian girls, we can probably assume that she’s referring to Kim. So, maybe it’s a good thing that she’s choosing to take her career in a different direction.

However, with so much success already from her current show and with her new book, Uganda be Kidding Me, once at number one on the New York Times best-seller list for more than a week, there’s no doubt that her future is promising. Handler, who is making about $9 million a year, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will probably be just fine and as her fans, we’ll be there to support her.
