Jyn Erso Is A Badass Leader In 'Rogue One' Clip

by Jordana Lipsitz

There is still a lot we don't know about Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), Rogue One's very mysterious lead. She is, at least until Dec. 16 when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters, an enigma. Luckily, the movie's trailers have given fans a wee bit of information about the rebel who's working hard to steal the Death Star schematics. The official trailer pointed out that Jyn has lived on her own since she was 15 and has committed many crimes against the empire — probably in part due to her "reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined" behavior. And in the new Rogue One 41-second TV spot, it's discovered that not only is Jyn a wild card, she is also a born leader.

The video, released on Sunday, features the standard Rogue One trailer fare — stormtroopers with terrible aim (seriously, don't they have classes on how to shoot a blaster?), meaningful looks from baddies and good guys alike, and that oh-so-intimidating Death Star. But the most interesting part of this new TV spot is that we get to see Jyn step up to the plate with inspirational words. The heart-wrenching tone of her voice would have any rebel hopping aboard the next X-wing and getting to battle.

Viewers first hear Jyn's voice pulling a little Princess Leia, saying, "I need your help," over video of members of the Death Star recon team — Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen), Baze Malbus (Wen Jiang), and a seemingly tough-to-convince Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). Jyn cajoles Gerrera, saying, "this is your chance to make a real difference."

Then, after some intimidating clips of heated sky and land battles with the Empire, fans get a glimpse of a true Jyn Erso pep talk. The soldier is standing in line with the rest of her comrades speaking to an unseen person on-screen. She reminds the Rebels, "We have hope! Rebellions are built on hope!" It's truly inspiring to see.

It's clear from this short snippet we're going to see Jyn morph into something awesome in Rogue One. She might start out as just another Han Solo-type, with the reckless aggressiveness and rule-breaking, but it seems she will be quick to step up to the plate. Jyn seems like a completely different, and exciting new character, and I can't wait to see what she does in the movie.
