There's A New Martian On 'Supergirl'

by Leah Marilla Thomas

Alien relations are taking the spotlight on Supergirl in Season 2. The President is introducing alien-friendly legislation, and Alex ventured to an alien speakeasy where those from other planets can feel less alone. One of the loneliest aliens, J'onn Jonzz, recently learned that he is not the only Mars survivor on Earth. Who is Miss Martian on Supergirl ? Played by Shanon Leal, M'gann M'orzz and the Manhunter are a little different.

In the comics, M'gann is from the warrior race of White Martians, and J'onn is a peaceful Green Martian. Sound familiar? It's almost exactly the conflict that Kara and Mon-El, the Daxamite. So many wars occurring on other planets that we don't know about. The point is that M'gann's people killed J'onn's people. They may be from the same planet, but that doesn't mean they have everything in common. However, Miss Martian isn't a villain. She was part of the Teen Titans and posed as the Star-Spangled Kid for a short time.

According to the official description of the episode "Survivors" on the CW series, "Hank is thrilled to have found another Martian and tries to get to know M'Gann better." Since Kara and Mon El are in a similar situation, it'll be interesting to see if Miss Martian's history deviates from the original comics.

She has telepathic powers in addition to flight, super strength, and other Martian powers. It's also interesting to note that in the comics, M'gann's parents were captured and executed by the government. She probably has strong opinions about whether or not humans in power can be trusted. Hank works with the government at the DEO, and is still not comfortable identifying himself as an alien on Earth. These two characters can clearly learn a lot from each other. Miss Martian is going to make an excellent addition to Supergirl.
