Another celebrity couple may have just called it quits. Woman's Day Australia claims Mariah Carey and James Packer ended their engagement. Reportedly, Packer was the one who called it quits with the singer, allegedly, "over her new reality TV show [an eight-part E! docu-series titled Mariah's World ] and extravagant spending." An alleged friend close to Packer told Woman's Day, "It’s all over. James had huge reservations about Mariah’s new reality TV show and the fact that she was willing to expose their lives to the world." That said, Packer is reportedly "allowing" Carey to keep her $10 million diamond engagement ring he gave her in January when they first got engaged. An E! spokesperson released the following statement to Bustle regarding Carey and Packer's alleged breakup:
"Production for 'Mariah's World' is ongoing and as previously announced the documentary series will offer an intimate look at the world renowned pop superstar and take viewers inside her private world. The series premieres Sunday, December 4th at 9pm on E! We have no comment regarding Mariah's personal relationships."
Update: Carey's rep released the following statement to Entertainment Tonight Thursday regarding an alleged fight the singer and Packer had during their September vacation in Greece, "The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah." Her rep added, "They are trying to work it out. Right now, they’re not sure if they will stay together." Carey's rep also noted that whenever they decide the future of their relationship, they plan to release an official statement. According to ET, Packer's rep says this is "simply untrue."
Earlier: Bustle has also reached out to Carey's rep for comment, but did not receive an immediate response. Packer could not be reached for comment.
Allegedly, Packer's family and friends knew these two would end things eventually, especially when the 46-year-old singer reportedly "refused" to go to Packer's sister's 50th birthday party in Sydney, Australia. "James is very generous but Mariah takes it to the next level," a source told Woman's Day. "When she refused to come to Australia for Gretel’s birthday party it created a lot of tension in the family. His mum hated to even hear her name mentioned, and James’ tight circle of friends never really thought they would marry."
All that said, if the two are over, it doesn't seem like it's for good. According to TMZ, "the door is not completely shut... yet." Although, insiders reportedly told TMZ that they've been dealing with a lot of "issues," including a rumor that Carey "had some sort of rendezvous with one of the dancers in her Vegas show." Regarding the latter, TMZ reports this "rendezvous" was caught on video during the filming of Mariah's World. (Bustle also asked Carey's rep about this claim, but did not yet receive a response.) Similar to Woman's Day, TMZ also claims that Packer was not a fan of the reality show from the beginning and it was a "major source of conflict."
