11 Products To Help WOC Slay The Natural Hair Game
For black women, natural hair can be a crowning glory. Completely elaborate in all it's complexities, types, and curl patterns, natural hair is just flat out amazing—and so are many of the products for natural hair we use to tame it.
While I'm not one to boast much, I can't help but to shout from the rooftops how super proud I am to be part of the natural hair club. Let's be clear: I'm not in anyway suggesting that chemically-treated hair, or hair with added extensions isn't just as beautiful, but there's something undeniably magical about black hair that is seemingly untouched by mortal man — or at least by other folks (I see you, Solange).
As Spiderman's grandma once said, "With great power comes great responsibility"—that definitely applies to rocking a natural mane. The impact natural hair has had one the fashion world, especially during NYFW, is major. Outside of the fashion world and into the everyday mainstream, it's up to us to properly empower and illustrate the majesty that is natural black hair.
Like care for any type of hair, a good regimen and super awesome products are key. There are plenty of items on the market specifically targeted for natural hair, and some that aren't but still get the job done. To help you weed out the bad and good, check out a few of my favorite hair care items. As a fellow natural-haired lady of mystery, I completely understand the need for effective products. Power to the puff.
1. Curl-Enhancing Cream
Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, $12, Amazon
Basically, this "smoothie" of hibiscus flower and coconut will leave your hair super soft, and smelling better than a field of fresh blooms. Not to mention, your curls will be on full bounce mode.
2. Hair Oil
Sachajuan Intensive Hair Oil, $50, Sephora
I cannot begin to tell you how obsessed I am with this penetrative hair oil. It's a little on the pricey side, but totally worth it, if not for the smell alone.
3. Curl Enhancer Spray
Kimble Beauty Bounce Back Liquid Curl Enhancer, $14, Amazon
As a naturalista, you can never get enough of products that help to show off that beautiful curl pattern.
4. Moisturizing Shampoo
Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Moisturizing Shampoo, $4, Walmart
Natural hair can't get enough moisture, which is why a shampoo packed with extra conditioning properties is the bomb.
5. Wide-Toothed Comb
Ouidad Double Detangler Comb, $26, Sephora
The last thing you want to do to natural curls is to rip through them. A wide-toothed detangling comb is the perfect tool to glide through even the thickest hair types.
6. Edge Control
Creme of Nature Perfect Edges, $6, Amazon
Perfect edges are a definite must when it comes to natural hair. Keep those baby hairs in place and snatched to full capacity.
7. Leave-In Conditioner
DevaCurl One Condition Original Daily Creme Conditioner, $16, Amazon
Leave-in-conditioner for natural hair is like water for the human body. Feed your hair its nutrients and it will stay healthy for you.
8. Hair Gel
ECO Styler Olive Oil Style Gel, $6, Sally Beauty Supply
Every girl needs a good hair gel, whether she's rocking natural curls or not.
9. Detangling Hair Brush
Tangle Teezer, $15, Sephora
In addition to a comb to avoid knots and hair damage, keep a good detangling brush at the ready, especially when hair is still damp.
10. Bristle Brush
Conair Wood Boar Hair Brush, $7, Amazon
While we're on the topic of brushes, boar bristle hair brushes are just as important as detangling brushes when it comes to maintaining a natural coif.
11. No Damage Hair Ties
Scunci No Damage Hair Ties, $6, Amazon
As much as I love my natural hair, I don't always want it in my face. Enter, the no-metal hair tie — the lack of a metal bit means there won't be any snags when you take it out.
With these beauty staples handy, you'll have incredible hair that's healthy, easy to manage, and of course, totally amazing.
