'Jane the Virgin's Love Triangle Could Return
Seeing a whole new, care-free Rafael (Justin Baldoni) on Jane the Virgin is freaking incredible, is it not? Looks like I wasn't the only one who was waiting for him to quit pining over Jane (Gina Rodriguez). Fans have creator Jennie Snyder Urman and her team to thank for this amazing and unexpected shift on the show, one that's happening because Urman was flat-out "sick of playing the love triangle." Of course, things have been glorious for Jane as Rafael and Michael (Brett Dier) fight for her affection, but now that Rafael's moved on, the drama will truly ensue. Not only will "conflict" arise from Rafael and Jane's family as they face Jane's marriage, but Raf will even get a "surprising love interest with a surprising relationship to Jane." That said, Jane and Michael's happily ever after may not be forever...
Urman explains why Rafael's epiphany (seeing Jane get married) not only sets off a comedic and dramatic turning point, but validates Jane's decision. "Are we gonna have him pining forever? He can’t, he’s a character who has to move on," she says. Urman explains that their co-parenting has been difficult, but not nearly as difficult as it can be without Raf always trying to please Jane.
"The minute we start to think, ‘Well what happens when he’s not trying to win her hand all the time?’ It opened up a lot more storytelling possibilities for us and made it more interesting," says Urman. "Now he’s like, ‘You’re gonna be hearing from me,'"she says. I cannot wait. Not only will Raf start giving Jane a piece of his mind when it comes to Mateo, but with his own love life as well.
"It’s opened us up to having more drama... more fun with Rafael," says Urman. "What happens when he dates someone Jane doesn’t like? What happens when that person wants to get their hands on Mateo?," she says. And everyone knows Raf needs no help landing the ladies. "He’s a great-looking guy, there’s gonna be ladies in his life," she says.
Baldoni's interpretation of Rafael's shift gives me so much life. "I just love what Justin brought to that, he feels a little free. And we’ve all been in those situations where you’re in love with someone and you’re obsessed and the switch flips," she says.
But as fans know, nothing on Jane the Virgin is definite. Regardless of Michael's recovery, his newlywed life with Jane, and Rafael's new outlook, Team Rafael should still hold out hope, according to Urman. "[The triangle] is not over, but it is over now," she reveals. "Things get complicated and life gets complicated. It’s there underneath," she says.
Things may get so crazy that Jane's love triangle with Sam (Miles Gaston Villanueva) could even come back. "We learn this isn’t the first time Jane is in a love triangle. There’s a chance [we could see him again]," Urman says. Is this stuff not straight out of a telenovela, or what?
Jane the Virgin airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
