As young women, it's more important than ever that we start talking, thinking, and knowing about breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, which means many designers are doing their part to help in this conversation. This month, a number of fashion and beauty brands are offering products that raise awareness and money for breast cancer. Here are my picks to shop.
According to recent data, one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Not only is that statistic absolutely terrifying, it also shows just how important it is that women of all ages are educated about the disease. Upon hearing of the "one in eight" statistic, Jessica Hendricks-Yee, the founder of jewelry line The Brave Collection, was inspired to create a pink bracelet that would benefit breast cancer research and help remind the community to be proactive about breast cancer prevention. "When I first heard this, I thought of my eight bridesmaids at my wedding, my dearest and most beloved friends, and realized that one of us is statistically at serious risk for having to face this disease."
For Hendricks-Yee, the most important part of October's initiative is spurring conversation about a topic that may normally seem overwhelming. "Breast cancer education is daunting, it's scary and uncomfortable to talk about," says Hendricks-Yee. "If we as brands can meet women on their turf, in an accessible, beautiful and empowering way, through fashion and beauty and open the door to these difficult conversations, we can make a massive impact by making sure that no one is in the dark about breast cancer prevention."
Hendricks-Yee is one of many, many designers doing her part to get us talking about breast cancer. Take a look at these 15 #pink products that are helping to raise awareness and money for the disease during the month of October, and be sure to read about some of the amazing causes they work with.
