'American Gods' Is Going To Be A Comic Book

by K.W. Colyard

Brace yourselves, Neil Gaiman fans, because an American Gods comic book adaptation is coming in 2017. The series will be divided into three parts — Shadow, My Ainsel, and The Moment of the Storm — totaling 27 installments, and will be written by P. Craig Russell and illustrated by Scott Hampton.

Gaiman's 2001 novel centers on Shadow Moon: an ex-con who is released from prison following the deaths of his wife and best friend. Shadow meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, who hires him as a bodyguard, and the two men embark on a cross-country roadtrip to rally forces for a coming war.

Russell has previous experience working with Gaiman's writing. He illustrated the graphic novel adaptations of Coraline and The Graveyard Book, as well as Sandman No. 50, "Ramadan." For the American Gods comic book adaptation, Russell will flex his artistic muscles by "supplying guest interior art alongside other past Gaiman collaborators and legendary comic creators like Walt Simonson, Mark Buckingham, and Colleen Doran."

Unlike the much-hyped American Gods TV series, which airs on Starz sometime next year, the American Gods comic book adaptation has a firm release date. American Gods: Shadow No. 1 will be available at your local comic book store on Mar. 15, 2017.
