It seems like only yesterday Snapchat was announcing the novel arrival of rainbow Snapchat filters, but alas, our social media baby has grown up and moved on to bigger and better things. Introducing Snapchat Spectacles, sunglasses that come equipped with an itty bitty wireless camera so that you can take hands-free videos that are immediately synched up with your app. Yes, the future has officially arrived, but how much do Snapchat Spectacles cost? The super cool wearable is surprisingly pretty affordable, and from the sound of things, it's definitely worth the money.
According to Tech Crunch, the tech-laden sunnies are due to come out this fall, and will cost $130 per pair. If you think about it, that's not a whole lot more than what you would pay for quality sunglasses that don't have the ability to take videos with the tap of a finger — which is exactly what Spectacles are supposed to be able to do. In a blog post Snap Inc. posted on Sept. 24, the company introduced Spectacles as "sunglasses with an integrated video camera that makes it easy to create Memories." That camera, by the way, is one of the smallest wireless cameras ever created, and Snap Inc. says it's been working on the technology for a few years now.
So how does it work? All you have to do is tap a button on the glasses' frames once to take a 10-second video (or up to three times to take a 30-second video). Because you're wearing Spectacles on your face, videos are captured at eye-level, and reach a 115-degree field of vision, according to Snap Inc. Spectacles are hooked up to your Snapchat app using wi-fi or Blue Tooth so you can save videos to your Snapchat Memories. Easy, right? Oh, and a little circle of lights up by the Spectacles' lens lights up when you're recording, so people will know what you're up to. Honestly, I think they look pretty cool:
Snap Inc. hasn't said exactly when Spectacles are going to be ready for retail, though in its blog post it did assure us that they will "be available soon." So, save your pennies, my friends, and uh, keep in mind that my birthday is at the end of the month, just in case you were still trying to decide what to get me.
