By now we all know to expect some sort of angle when Amy Schumer hits the red carpet. And the 2016 Emmys were no different. This time, Schumer brought her sister along as she ascended the E! News steps to chat with Giuliana Rancic, in nearly matching gowns. The sisters had some sort of bit going, but Rancic kept on with her questions, barrelling right on through to the question we've learned is required for celebs to be able to wear all those fabulous free gowns and shoes: Who are you wearing? Our girl responded accordingly by shouting out Vivienne Westwood for her dress and O.B. for her tampon. Yep, Amy Schumer just talked about her tampon at the Emmys and it's just about the best thing ever.
Women have been doing lots of work to normalize talk of periods — you know, that thing that naturally happens to lots of women once a month because of this thing called biology. Recently, the ladies of Broad City used period pants to show how uncomfortable women's bodily functions make men (and at the same time normalized the whole affair); in the following episode, Abbi & Ilana's tampon hunt on the plane drove that conversation further; and stars like Dance Moms' Chloe Lukasiak are working to destigmatize this very real part of women's lives
Seeing someone as famous and beloved as Schumer even jokingly mention her tampon alongside all her glamorous designer duds is a big step in the right direction. We have periods. It's normal. Even when you're strolling down the red carpet. Boom.
