Pablo Escobar's Wife Has A Story Beyond 'Narcos'

by Leah Marilla Thomas

Narcos Season 2 is playing coy with audience expectations, and is making no secret of the fact that Pablo Escobar, the real-life figure who the series is about, died in real life. However, not every detail on the show is ripped from the headlines and/or the history books. Who is Pablo Escobar's wife on Narcos ? On the Netlfix series, the character's wife and mother of his two children is a young woman named Tata, played by actress Paulina Gaitan. But in real life, Escobar was married to a woman named Maria Victoria Henao.

Not much is known about Henao, which is probably for the best. She deserves some privacy, in my opinion. After Escobar's death in 1993, his family was plunged into further turmoil. Their lives in danger from rival traffickers, Maria and her two children fled the country, and traveled for a year before being granted asylum in Argentina, according to the BBC. According to The Washington Post, her son eventually changed his name to Sebastian Marroquin. He and his sister both lived in Buenos Aires as of 2009. His sister is believed to be living under an alias as well, according to El Tiempo. Perhaps that is why Escobar's wife is named Tata on Narcos, out of respect for Maria and her two children.

While the series is based on true events, it is still a work of fiction. If Narcos continues to follow the fictional Pablo's wife Tata after his death, her story doesn't necessarily have to match real life. The show can tell whatever story it wants.
