A quick heads up before you start reading this: this is one of those article topics that fits into the category of “subjects that genuinely and wholeheartedly thrill me to write about.” Yes. Researching and rounding up the best natural deodorants that actually work is the type of activity that gets me out of bed in the morning. Here’s why.

My first writing job was for a nutrition business, and I was asked to take several health courses in preparation. I figured nutrition and clean living was all about what you put into your body, but it turns out it’s got a lot to do with what you put on your body, too. Your skin is porous, meaning that it absorbs everything, and synthetic deodorants contain some of the worst ingredients out there.

Then you’ve got something called flora — natural microbes or bacteria that live on the surface of your skin. Some of them are good for you, and actually help your body fend off odor-causing bacteria on its own. The chemicals in your usual deodorants kill all of them, making smells and sweating issues worse. Consequently, yes, I’m all about smelling great all the time, but I’m also about all about finding a natural deodorant that works for you. Ahead, eight different ways to ditch your synthetic deodorant.

1. Absorb Sweat With Hardwood Charcoal

PiperWai Natural Deodorant, $16, Amazon

This PiperWai natural deodorant first got its start on the hit show Shark Tank, when Jess Edelstein and Sarah Ribner got fed up with the lack of reliable natural deodorants on the market. Its main ingredient is charcoal (yep, burnt hardwood), which can absorb a thousand times its own weight in smells and moisture. Each jar also lasts about three months.

2. Time To Get Excited About A Deodorant

Schmidt's Lavender and Sage Natural Deodorant, $9, Amazon

For this one, reviewers are saying things like, “I probably shouldn't get this excited about a deodorant, but I can't help it.” Schmidt's Lavender and sage deodorant uses a mix of great-smelling essential oils and absorbent powders to reduce moisture and overcome odors. It sinks into your skin quickly and without stains, making this a good option for people who are looking for an easy transition into the world of natural deodorants.

3. Rub This Giant Rock All Over Your Body

Crystal Body Deodorant, $7, Amazon

If you want to control all-over sweating or you’re just up for trying something new, check out this crystal body deodorant. It’s basically a giant rock of salt that you rub anywhere and everywhere (including underarms), and the minerals in the salt work to form a protective barrier on your skin that entirely eradicates all odors. It also won’t stain, won’t leave you sticky, and won’t cause reactions on sensitive skin.

4. Use Magnesium To Neutralize Smells

Nasanta Magnesium Deodorant For Men, $15, Amazon

I’m not often deterred by gender-specific products — we’ve all got armpits, right? This one’s free of all forms of aluminum, and instead uses magnesium (an essential mineral for easing tension, fighting cramps, and muscle health) to keep you smelling super fresh all day. Many reviewers say it goes strong for 12 hours or more, and there are a few women in the review section who second that statement.

5. Try One Of The Most Popular Options Out There

Primal Pit Paste Deodorant, $9, Amazon

This Primal Pit Paste deodorant is probably one of the most popular natural deodorants out there. It skips the parabens, aluminum, and chemicals, and instead uses absorbent, organic ingredients that keep you dry and smelling awesome. It’s got the soft floral aroma of lavender, and one person who said she’s spent upwards of $100 testing natural deodorants calls this her “favorite product on Earth.” Bold claim, ma’am, but I’m all for it.

6. Take Your Crystal Body Rock With You On The Go

Thai Deodorant Stone Crystal-Deodorant, $8, Amazon

This is the same general idea as the crystal body rock, but the Thai Deodorant Stone version comes in an easy-to-use and easy-to-travel-with stick. It’s hypoallergenic, non-staining, and really effective according to reviewers — one in particular said they gave it a three-day test, and it held up no problem.

7. Stay Fresh With This Travel-Friendly Essential Oil Mixture

EO Organic Deodorant Spray, $8, Amazon

This Eo organic deodorant spray is an amazing on-the-go deodorizer, as it contains nothing but organic essential oils in an easy spray that naturally neutralizes smells. It leaves you feeling fresh and smelling clean, and it’s a great option to keep in your bag for when you didn’t realize that party was going to be held outside in the blazing sun. (Plus, you can check out one Bustle staffer's personal trial with the spray!)

8. Moisturize, Heal, And Deodorize All At The Same Time

Tea Tree Oil Therapeutic Lotion, $15, Amazon

Heal irritated skin while moisturizing and fighting body odor? Thank you kindly, Theratree. This Tea Tree Oil therapeutic lotion is technically a moisturizer, but because it’s loaded with tea tree as well as other great essential oils, it fights the kinds of bacteria that cause odors. It’s especially great on your feet, but can be used anywhere else, too, and it even helps with blemishes and infections.
