This Is The Best Time To Buy Wine
Are you one of those people who stocks up on wine on the weekends, right before your weekly binge-watching session? That’s all fine and good, but just know that you’re probably doing it wrong: A study conducted by mobile shopping app Ibotta found that Tuesday is the best day to buy wine, saving you an average of six percent compared to if you check out over the weekend. That may not seem like a lot if you’re like me and you never pay more than $11 for a bottle of wine, but if you’re also like me and you buy wine on an alarmingly regular basis, I’m willing to bet that that six percent will add up over time.
The study also found that grocery stores and liquor stores aren’t necessarily the places to find the best deals on your favorite vino — you’ll want to hit up an in-bulk retailer, where you can save as much as $1.30 on a bottle of red versus your local grocery or convenience store.
More of a beer drinker? It’s still not a great idea to grab that 30-rack right before your Saturday night party. In fact, Mondays are the best days to buy beer, saving shoppers an average of nine percent on a six-pack.
If this study has convinced you to rearrange your entire schedule, you’re not alone, because I’m contemplating the same thing. While you’re switching your wine-buying day, take note of these optimal shopping days for other items on your list.
1. Airline Tickets
“Oh, this one’s obvious,” you may be thinking. “Everyone knows the best day to buy airline tickets is Tuesday.” Not so fast. A recent New York Times article explained that when it comes to airline prices, there are many more factors at play than simply the day of the week you buy, such as your travel dates and any significant holidays or events coinciding with your trip. In fact, a recent report by Expedia cited in the article found that weekends may actually have the best fares. The same report also concluded that the best time to buy a ticket is 57 days in advance from your trip.
2. Groceries
If you do your grocery shopping for the week on Sunday, you may be doing it right. A 2014 article from U.S. News & World Report found Sundays are a good day to save on food, noting that many grocery stores start their weekly deals on Sunday and Wednesday. Therefore, Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays are all good bets.
3. Electronics
I'm not sure how often one shops for electronics, but if you’re in the market for a new computer, tablet, etc., Mondays are the day to buy, according to ABC News.
4. Clothing
Good news for the fashionistas out there: The best day to stock up on your weekend wardrobe is right before the weekend — Thursdays, to be exact. ABC News reported that many retailers add new sale merchandise on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, so heading to the store on Thursday is a good bet for scoring some deals.
5. Gas
If you’re so on top of your game that you actually buy gas on a certain day of the week, and not just when your car starts yelling at you to refuel, major props. Though prices will obviously vary by region, a study by Gas Buddy found that weekends, especially Sundays, are the best days to fuel up.
Just think of all the wine bottles, outfits, laptops, plane tickets, and gallons of gas you can buy with all this newfound knowledge.
