If there’s one thing I can always use more of, it’s useful Gmail tricks and tips. As someone who makes a living via the internet, I spend what’s probably a disgusting amount of time online, a huge amount of which involves Gmail. So how do you make the most of the experience? By making an effort to learn some handy shortcuts and educate yourself about features that you might not know exist. We’ve talked about a couple of these tricks before — how to use canned responses, how to unsend things, and so on and so forth — but a number of them were new to me, so I feel they’re worth addressing. Somewhat surprisingly, Gmail apparently isn't the most popular email client in the world; the precise numbers depend on which data set you’re looking at (and there are a lot of them out there), but the most recent information I could find, which was published at the end 2015 by Litmus, notes that Gmail accounted for 15.2 percent of opens in November of last year. That puts it in the number two slot, below iOS’ email client (which netted almost a third of all opens — 32.2 percent).
Even so, though, anecdotal evidence suggests that Gmail is definitely one of the most favored browser-based clients; Outlook is no longer the only option for companies powering their corporate email services, for example, and honestly, it’s become pretty rare to find yourself emailing someone who doesn’t have a Gmail address. Heck, as a relatively early adopter, I’ve been using Gmail as my primary email address and client for almost 10 years — and honestly, the idea of venturing into the online world without the aid of Gmail’s magnificent spam filter fills me with horror.
Given that I am thus so reliant on Gmail to help me manage my online experience, it’s therefore perhaps not unsurprising that sinding out I can, say, reply to and archive a message at the same time, or customize my labels menu, or organize things in such a way that it makes getting things done a whole lot easier, is enough to inspire me to shout, “HOORAY!” and spread my newfound wisdom far and wide.
