11 Cooling Beauty Products You Need This Summer
Summertime can be a challenging season for beauty. With temperatures reaching astronomical levels, our routines often take a backseat so we can stay cool and hydrated. Before discovering cooling beauty products, trying to maintain my beauty obsession in the warmer months had proven to be pretty nightmarish. Just by wearing eyeshadow, mascara, and lipstick, my skin felt endlessly hotter as the pigments blocked any circulation of cooling relief.
Often, I'd end up having to splash water on my face to seek relief, compromising my beautiful makeup job along the way. Eventually, I began wearing makeup way less during the warmer months, at a loss to how I could make my beauty routine get along with the weather.
Since I've adopted face makeup into my daily routine recently, the struggle for maintaining cool composure on my visage has never been more real. But this summer, I began seeking out beauty products and routines that might help me stay cool with or without makeup. Cooling gels and lotions are great for intermittent refreshers in my day, and beauty products formulated with mint or water have now become part of my summer beauty arsenal.
If you're looking for some extra tools to help your skin cool down this summer, or you're in the market for makeup that's more refreshing than heavy, here are some products to consider.
1. Cooling Rollerball
Milk Makeup Cooling Water, $24, Sephora
While rollerballs like this are normally designed to reduce puffiness under our eyes, they're even better as an all-over body stick. I like swiping this stuff in my warmer nooks and crannies (like under my boobs) before stepping outside on a hot day, and bringing it with me to the beach to soothe any overexposed skin.
2. Shower Cool Down
Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Pure Castile Liquid Soap 16 oz, $16, Amazon
During a heat wave, all you likely want is a shower. But if you're a hot shower person like myself and lacking A/C, they're not always as refreshing as they sound. Pop a bottle of peppermint Dr. Bronner's in the shower, and cool down your hot and bothered skin as you wash.
3. Cool As A Cucumber
Yes To Cucumbers Cooling Hydrating Mist, $7, Amazon
Still feeling hot post-shower? Mist this cooling cucumber mist all over your body for continual freshness.
4. Refreshing Face Mists
Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herb And Rosewater, $7, Nordstrom
Between the heat and the sun, I find myself feeling just plain yucky. If you're perpetually overheated, consider carrying a rosy-scented face mist around to refresh your face and overwhelm your senses with a more pleasant scent (rather than your persistent BO).
5. Freshen & Protect
Neutrogena Fresh Cooling Mist Sunscreen, $14, Amazon
With Neutrogena's Fresh Cooling Mist Sunscreen, you can stay protected from the sun while also cooling your skin. As someone who hates sunblock for the simple reason that it makes me feel hotter on summer days, the idea of a sunscreen that actually cools your skin sounds like The Dream.
6. Minty Lips
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics x UO Lip Tar In Shoegazer, $16, Urban Outfitters
You don't always have to choose between staying cool and wearing makeup. With OCC's Lip Tars, which are formulated with peppermint oil, your lips will feel light, hydrated, and endlessly cool.
7. The Ultimate Cooling Ingredient
Bbrowbar Aloe Vera Gel, $51, Net-A-Porter
Check out this concentrated gel with one of the most soothing ingredients nature has to offer: aloe. It's perfect for overheated skin, after sun care, and for soothing your body post wax. If you're on a budget, the aloe gel for sunburns found in most drugstores is a great alternative.
8. Head-To-Toe Coolness
Origins Hit Refresh Cooling Moisturizer with Hawaiian Mineral Water, $32, Sephora
Moisturize and cool skin simultaneously with this refreshing cream gel formulated with mint, spearmint, and eucalyptus.
9. Wake-Up Call
Kiehl's Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque, $32, Nordstrom
This radiance mask cools down your face and delivers an energizing glow to your visage with equal power. Check it out and give your oily, overheated skin a reboot.
10. Freshen Overheated Pits
Mint Deodorant, $10, Lone Deodorant
Have your deod multitask for you by using one formulated with cooling ingredients like mint and aloe, and keep your pits dry and fresh-feeling this summer.
11. Keeping It Cool
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, $32, Sephora
This product can be used as a primer and a setting spray, as well as an intermittent refresher for your concealer and highlighter-adorned face. Store it in the fridge for optimal cooling relief.
So you see? There really is no reason to compromise your beauty routine just because the temperatures are soaring.
