The moment many of us have been waiting for has come, the trailer for Oprah's Lindsay Lohan docu-series is out, and it looks every bit the hot mess we rather expected it to be. In it, we get a small sense of so many things: Oprah's frustration, Lindsay's manic lifestyle, Lindsay's loser dad ... but none of this should come as a surprise. For those who were going to tune in regardless, this trailer will only whet their appetite, but for those of us who naively hoped that Oprah would somehow manage to turn Lindsay's life around, prepare for inevitable disappointment.
After all, if anyone was going to be capable of forcing Lindsay to get her life together, it was Oprah. She's the closest thing we have to a modern day messiah. But in the trailer, you can see Oprah getting frustrated — one gets the definite sense that this will not be the happy ending, the neat tie-up she, and maybe even Lindsay, had so desperately hoped for.
And really, in the end, what made the idea of a Lindsay Lohan reality series so fascinating, both to us and to Queen O herself, was the idea of redemption, of conquering the insurmountable addiction problems that have plagued Lindsay since the bygone days of Confessions of A Teenage Drama Queen. But all the trailer gives away is heavy hints that Lindsay is every bit the unconquerable train wreck we already thought she was, which is sad, but will, indubitably, make for great television.
Sorry Oprah, you might run the entire world, but nothing, not even you, can change Lindsay Lohan.
