11 Reasons Not To Wash Your Hair Everyday
Especially during the hotter months, finding ways around washing your hair can be tricky. But, believe it or not, there are plenty of reasons why you should stop washing your hair every day, and I'm about to share them. I'm not saying to go a week or two without a wash, but as it relates to the health of your hair and scalp, these things are helpful to know.
I totally recognize that everyone's hair is different, and some people tend to have more issues with oil than others, so just to be clear, I'm not saying that what works for me will work for you, or vice versa. But, there are a few good reasons to grab your bottle of dry shampoo every now and then! Believe me, as someone who was formerly a three season athlete, I used to be the biggest offender of the daily wash. Once I stopped lathering up my strands on the daily, my hair got shinier, my scalp became less dry and my split ends became almost non-existent. Ready to keep reading? Thought so!
Aside from my own experience with the matter, there are plenty of reputable sources on the all-knowing Internet that support this theory. Here are just a few of the many reasons out there.
1. It Strips Your Hair Of Its Natural Oils
It's true that too much oil isn't necessarily a good thing, but some natural oil is essential to the health of your hair. Over washing can strip the hair of its natural oils, thus leaving it drier and more prone to breakage, according to The Huffington Post.
2. It Fades Color Faster
Because most toners eventually wash out, even WebMD points out that the best way to preserve your color and prevent the appearance of fading or brassiness is to wash less frequently.
3. It Dulls Shiny Locks
Matrix haircare points out that one of the best ways to restore shine to your hair is by washing less frequently, which helps prevent dryness and preserve luster.
4. It Causes More Split Ends
According to StyleCaster, washing your hair every day does not allow enough time for it to replenish its natural oils. The result? Dry, brittle hair and split ends. The fix? Try washing your hair every other day instead.
5. It Leads To More Heat Styling
While this one is self explanatory, it turns out that less heat styling can also be a good thing for hair growth. Since less heat usually equals less split ends, seasoned beauty blogger Amber Fillerup of Barefoot Blonde lists over washing as one of the habits to stay away from when trying to grow your hair long.
6. It's Expensive
If you're ballin' on a budget or simply looking for yet another reason to skip a wash, the less shampoo and conditioner you use, the more money you'll save at the drugstore!
7. Dirty Hair Can Be Easier To Style
Particularly for pin straight hair that doesn't like to hold a curl, InStyle points out that dirty hair can be used to your advantage and actually make your hair easier to style! However, if you really can't skip a wash, you can create "dirty" hair using product, too.
8. It Causes Product Buildup
A lot of us wash our hair everyday to help strip it of styling products, but actually allwomenstalk.com points out that the opposite might be true, since washing more frequently causes us to use products more often.
9. It Costs You Time
Imagine how many more times you could press snooze if you didn't have to worry about the morning blow dry!
10. You'll Actually Have Less Grease
While most of us wash our hair to get rid of grease, it turns out that over washing the hair can cause the scalp to become drier and therefore produce more oil to compensate. Byrdie points out that washing less often can actually help your hair to become less oily over time.
11. It Dries Out The Scalp
The combination of hot water and over washing your hair can cause the scalp to become dry, which can cause dandruff. Yikes! Everyday Health says that the best way to avoid this problem is to skip a wash every once in a while.
