Kat Von D Beauty Is Becoming More Animal Friendly
Kat Von D's cosmetics line has become a household name in beauty with its cult-favorite items like the tattoo eyeliner and colorful liquid lipsticks. With the huge success of their latest launch, the jewel-toned Serpentina Palette, I can't help but wonder what's next on the agenda for the makeup brand. Apparently, changing its formulas. Is Kat Von D Beauty vegan? Word on the street is that the label is becoming even more animal-friendly.
First of all, what exactly is vegan makeup? It essentially means cosmetics that are completely free of any animal bi-products and that haven't been tested on animals. In a recent interview for LAIKA Magazine, Kat Von D talked about implementing a vegan lifestyle, and discusses her plans to turn her brand completely vegan. She admitted to not being vegan when she first launched the line, confessing that she didn't really know much about ingredients. "I would always think it was funny when brands would be like, 'Oh, we’re vegan.' Yeah, well, you don’t eat lipstick. [I was] super ignorant, you know?" She told the mag."I have a platform and this, to me, is the number one most important issue on this planet," she added.
According to a press release, she told LAIKA that she is reformulating anything with carmine, a red dye made from insects. "If we can’t reformulate them, we just throw them out," she said.
Many of the brand's products are already vegan. One quick look at katvondbeauty.com reveals an entire dedicated section titled #VEGANALERT with tons of totally vegan products such as the Lock-It Concealer, the Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, and the Tattoo Brow. The section on the site includes a note from the brand, explaining that "[a]lthough the FDA hasn’t established a regulation for what it means to be 'vegan,' we define it as as a product that does not contain any animal products or by-products, and has not been tested on animals." Any product marked #VeganAlert on the site meets this definition. No word on when the entire line will become vegan just yet, but it appears Von D is slowly but surely rolling out her new formulations.
I totally commend her for her commitment to veganism.
Now you don't have to worry about what you're putting on your face. Hopefully this will inspire even more brands to go vegan as well.
