How To Create A DIY Serum For Smooth Legs & Arms

by Emma Matthews

If there’s one beauty essential that often gets overlooked, it’s a body scrub or a good exfoliating serum for your legs and arms. The product not only comes in handy during the colder months, but it’s also crucial when the temperature soars and we see the dreaded return of peeling, blistered skin.

I’ve suffered my fair share of sunburn lately. That’s why I’ve been on the hunt for an easy-to-make exfoliating serum that'll help soothe my legs in particular at any season. Thankfully, I found One Good Thing's tutorial for an exfoliating scrub that served as a great foundation.

Created from a variety of kitchen-friendly ingredients, the recipe is one of the best I’ve found. Unlike many DIYs that use oatmeal or sea salt, the primary ingredient here is a fine-grain, white sugar. This means that the scrub is far less coarse and is excellent at buffing away dead skin cells. The fineness of the particles also mean it won't be too harsh and make your already-sensitive skin feel even worse.

As for the other ingredients used in the DIY, coconut oil acts as a moisturizer for the arms and legs. Again, this will help reduce the harshness of the peeling and ensure that any new skin coming through will feel silky soft. Alongside that, citrus juice has also been utilized, which will help brighten the skin and give it a natural glow.

Intrigued? Here’s how you can my new favorite body serum for yourself.

What You’ll Need

For the DIY, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Sugar
  • Lemon Juice
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Storage Container

1. Spoon Coconut Oil Into A Bowl

Start by spooning coconut oil into a mixing bowl. There are no exact measurements for this DIY. The amount you add will depend on how much serum you wish to make, but as a rough guideline, I’d recommend two to three heaped tablespoons.

2. Microwave And Stir

After adding some coconut oil into your bowl, pop the goods into a microwave for a few seconds. This will help the oil melt. Once you’ve removed it, give it a quick stir and crush out any lumps and bumps with a spoon.

3. Spoon In Sugar

Next, add in multiple spoonfuls of sugar. Again, there aren’t any exact measurements for this. Just make sure that you have equal parts sugar and oil.

4. Squeeze In Lemon

The final ingredient left to add is lemon juice. You don't need a lot of this, since too much citrus can dry your skin out. A simple squeeze or two is all it takes.

5. Pour Into An Empty Container

Finally, stir everything together before pouring it in an empty container. And there you have it. You now have an easy-to-make DIY serum that should help with peeling and ensure that your arms and legs are left feeling silky soft any time of year.

Personally, I use the serum in the bath. I pour a small amount out of the bottle and then rub it in circular motions across my limbs, paying special attention to any patches that are peeling. You can also use it before shaving, though. Just apply it before using a razor to get a precise, fresh cut.

Go forth, and enjoy your silky stems.
