'The Secret Life Of Pets' Soundtrack Is Purr-fect

by Olivia Truffaut-Wong

The Secret Life of Pets is hoping to join Finding Dory, Zootopia, and The Angry Birds Movie in the 2016 animated movie hall of fame when it hits theaters on July 8, but it's doing things a bit differently. While most animated films released nowadays feature original songs — Shakira's "Try Everything" for Zootopia, for example — The Secret Life of Pets is foregoing any original singles. Now, that's not to say that music doesn't play a huge part in the animated film. As seen in the first round of trailers, among the ragtag team of pets featured in the film is a poodle who loves System of a Down, so its safe to say the movie isn't music-free — and the awesome The Secret Life of Pets soundtrack proves that the film's tracklist is nothing to scoff at.

The Secret Life of Pets official soundtrack primarily features an original score from composer Alexendre Desplat, and having Desplat compose the music certainly elevates the film's status. The composer has been nominated for eight Academy Awards — he won his first in 2015 for The Grand Budapest Hotel, beating out, among others, his own score for The Imitation Game — and is also working on music for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Desplat's Secret Life of Pets soundtrack will be available for purchase via Amazon on July 8, but is currently available to purchase on iTunes and to stream on Spotify.

Sadly, it doesn't appear that The Secret Life of Pets will release a soundtrack of pop music featured in the film. However, as the film is about a group of domesticated pets who go searching around New York City for their lost friend, it's obvious there will be pop music sprinkled in here and there. LyricsSoundtrack.com has a list of songs reportedly featured in the film, ranging from Taylor Swift's "Welcome to New York" to Beastie Boys' "No Sleep Till Brooklyn." According to the site, the movie also features Pharrell Williams' "Happy," which was originally written and released for the animated film Despicable Me 2, made by the same studio. Trailers for the film also feature Macklemore's "Downtown," Pitbull's "Wild, Wild Love," and System of a Down's "Bounce."

Whether or not a second soundtrack is released, most of the pop songs featured in The Secret Life of Pets can likely be found on Spotify, so if you're a huge fan of the movie, you can always make your own soundtrack. In the meantime, The Secret Life of Pets opens in theaters on Friday, July 8.
