This Is The Best Time To Wash Your Hair

by Sienna Fantozzi

Whatever your opinion is on how often you should wash your hair, you have to wash it eventually, and when you do, you may not be entirely sure if it's better to wash hair at night or in the morning. It doesn't seem like the time of day would make that much of a difference, but according to a hairstylist, there is totally a better time of day to wash your hair.

While we all put thought into how often we wash our hair and how we condition it/care for it in order to keep it shiny and healthy, paying attention to what time of day you wash it isn't exactly something that may be given a lot of emphasis or consideration. While one may be more convenient for your schedule, the time of day you wash your hair doesn't really seem that important to your hair's overall health — but it totally is. I spoke with an expert hairstylist to find out exactly when to wash your hair for the healthiest hair possible, and as it turns out, one is definitely better than the other.

According to Dani Faraj, professional stylist at Brighton Salon in Beverly Hills, it's better to wash your hair at night if you can. "It is better to wash your hair at night rather than the morning so the hair has time to dry naturally. Especially for colored hair," Faraj said.

OK, so that makes sense, the less heat the better and all, but if you're concerned about crazy morning hair when you go to bed with it wet, don't be. To make your morning routine easier, "Softly blow-dry on low heat before bed leaving in just a hint of moisture," Faraj said. And if you want some totally heatless ways to style your hair overnight, check out this tutorial.

But whatever you do, avoid putting your hair in a ponytail. "Do not throw your hair in a ponytail when wet before bed as it may cause additional breakage since hair swells when drying," Faraj said. Yikes. That is something I think we all want to avoid.
