35 RBG Memes To Celebrate The SCOTUS HB2 Ruling
On Monday, the Supreme Court handed down the biggest ruling on abortion in two decades — and for once, it was actually good news. The 5-3 decision ruled in favor of Whole Women's Health. Whole Women's Health v. Hellerstedt sought to decide whether the state of Texas could continue enforcing extremely restrictive regulations on abortion providers (known as TRAP laws, they would have forced numerous abortion clinics to close and greatly limited a woman's right to choose). And while she didn't write the majority opinion, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg issued a statement of her own on the historic ruling.
"It is beyond rational belief that H. B. 2 could genuinely protect the health of women," Ginsburg wrote. "Many medical procedures, including childbirth, are far more dangerous to patients, yet are not subject to ambulatory surgical-center or hospital admitting-privileges requirements. ... When a State severely limits access to safe and legal procedures, women in desperate circumstances may resort to unlicensed rogue practitioners, faute de mieux [for want of a better alternative], at great risk to their health and safety."
In this moment of celebration for pro-choice activists, there's no better time to celebrate one of our greatest, longest-standing champions of choice. The Notorious RBG has been fighting for our right to choose for decades — and she shows no sign of stopping. The least we can do is show her some love.
