I'm a sucker for sex-positive swag. From fair trade organic condoms to hemp floggers to the latest in vibrator tech, there are few things I won't try. Although I often come across cutting edge merch in the course of writing about sex for a living, sometimes I just wish someone would do the work for me. Enter the erotic subscription service Unbound Box, a monthly collection of carefully curated, high end products for women that are queer friendly, eco-friendly, and dedicated to "closing the orgasm gap" — a goal that will surely inspire many sexually active folks to come together.
Unbound was founded by a group of likeminded ladies in 2013 who were dissatisfied by the women's sexual health and wellness products they saw on the market. An antidote to items that are "typically shoddy, tacky and primarily marketed toward men," Unbound is "carefully calibrated to offer a differentiated, holistic, and above all female-focused solution," COO Jackie Churchwell tells Bustle.
So, basically, when you sign up for their subscription service at $65 every three months, you won't be getting cinnamon-flavored lube loaded with chemicals, fuzzy handcuffs, penis gummies, and a cheap nylon thong.
Here are five facts to know about Unbound:
1. They Vet All Their Products
Unbound is all about quality control. They won't put anything in their box that you wouldn't put in yours. "For each product category (e.g. water-based lube etc.) we attempt to vet 10-15 variants to ensure the two or three we feature on the site are the best of the bunch and products we truly believe in," says Churchwell.
2. They Aren't Just Vanilla
Assuming everyone masturbates or has partnered sex the same old way is not Unbound's style. They're one of the few sexy subscription services that has a collection dedicated to anal sex — behold, the Booty Box! — and they don't shy away from kink accessories like handcuffs and nipple clamps, either.
3. They're More Than A Subscription Box
In addition to their subscription boxes, Unbound also carries limited edition boxes and individual products from sex toys to lingerie — and has an online magazine to promote their sex-positive message. You'll find diverse offerings like original erotica, first-person narratives on self-love, product reviews, and articles on condoms.
4. They Care About The Environment
Unbound's ethos to work with companies with a conscience feels almost as good as their products do. "We very much endeavor to source product from companies with a great corporate ethos and a mind towards body-friendly, sustainable products," Churchwell says. This includes items like certified organic lube by Good Clean Love and vegan condoms by Loveability.
5. They Give Back
Unbound aims to not only please their customers, but to spread sex-positive empowerment to those in need. "We are very proud to say we put our money where our mouth is by donating 6.9 percent of profits to non-profits supporting women's sexual health and wellness," Churchwell says.
