Blue lipstick is the newest beauty trend we never knew we needed. On Tuesday morning, Kylie Jenner announced two matte blue lip kits that will launch this Friday (June 24) in honor of Fourth of July. After all, what better way to show off your American Spirt than with lips that look like you jumped face first into a blueberry pie.
Yes, the two new shades are both blue, but they're actually very different. Skylie is the lighter of the two glosses, and is the same color as Kylie's sky blue Ferrari — hence the name, which she referred to in a Snapchat photo this afternoon as "Kylie Blue." Given that the youngest Jenner has worn countless different blue wigs in the last few years, its no surprise that she has decided to take claim over the color as her signature.
Freedom, which is a clear homage to American Patriotism in honor of the upcoming holiday, is a darker pigmented navy. It looks like it goes on super thick and provides fantastic coverage (like all of Jenner's lip products are rumored to do, though I wouldn't know because I'm still waiting for mine to arrive via UPS).
Here are some sample images of both colors:
These bright blues have received some mixed reviews since Jenner announced them this morning. They are definitely much different than what we are used to seeing from her collection, which until now has mainly been neutral and expected shades. While I can really only imagine seeing Skylie worn to a themed party or in a neon-inspired kissing booth (as in, not in any serious way) Freedom lends itself a bit better to daily wear. If you can't wait until Friday to get your hands on a deep blue lipstick, here are seven alternatives you can shop right now.
1. Devout Navy Blue Lipgloss
Devout Navy Blue Lip Gloss, $1.50, Etsy.com
This highly pigmented, potted gloss, is a bit shinier than Kylie's matte version, but according to the reviews it goes on super thick and offers heavy, lasting coverage.
2. Ardency Inn Modster Long Play
Ardency Inn Modster Long Play Supercharged Lip Color, $25, UrbanOutfitters.com
Leave it to Urban Outfitters to have the perfect shade of navy blue lipstick. The '90s grunge girl inside all of us is cheering.
3. Urban Decay Vice
Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Heroine, $17, Sephora.com
This navy Urban Decay shade is brand new, which pretty much confirms the theory that blue lipstick is going to be the next hot beauty trend this season.
4. Lipstick Queen Hello Sailor Lipstick
Lipstick Queen Hello Sailor Lipstick, $25, Ulta.com
If you like your packaging to coordinate with the shade of your lipstick (which personally, I do, because it makes it easier to know what I'm looking for among the thousands of different tubes in my cosmetics drawer) than this is the navy for you.
5. Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick
Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liptick in Squid Ink, $26, Sephora.com
This super dark navy is somewhere in between Freedom and KyMajesty, so as far as lip kit alternatives go this shade is technically two for the price of one!
6. Nyx Cosmetics Wicked Lippies
Nyx Cosmetics Wicked Lippies in Sinful, $6, BeautyEncounter.com
Nyx's highly pigmented jewel tone has a metallic finish, but for only $6 (a third of what the real thing costs) it may be worth testing out.
7. Maybelline Color Sensational The Loaded Bold Lip Color
Maybelline Color Sensational The Loaded Bold Lip Color in Midnight Blue, $7.49, Ulta.com
This lipstick goes on thickly and smoothly, and leaves your lips with a creamy, matte finish thanks to its honey nectar base.
