2014 Golden Globes: Jennifer Lawrence

The American Hustle star came out of the 2014 awards-show season gate with a strapless Dior gown that — if not great — was certainly memorable (and totally meme-inspiring). It may not have been the best thing we’ve ever seen Lawrence wear, but it sure got everyone talking.

Nyong’o, on the other hand, had everyone taking notice of her immediately — and for all the right reasons — when she showed up to her first awards show in this flawless caped Ralph Lauren gown, which remains one of the best dresses of the season.

2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards: Jennifer Lawrence

We may have seen Lawrence in a strapless navy gown once before, but it was the curve-hugging fit and sparkly multi-hued sequins that gave this Dior gown true red carpet appeal.

The 12 Years a Slave star opted for a blue hue, too, though her bright teal Gucci gown — complete with intricate floral detailing along the neckline — was even more eye-catching than her fellow Best Supporting Actress contender.

A Dior Duel: Jennifer Lawrence

It’s no secret that Lawrence is the now-famous face of Dior, and she made the design label oh-so-proud when she showed up to collect her Oscar at last year’s Academy Awards in this dreamy, voluminous, strapless gown.

A Dior Duel: Lupita Nyong'o

Following in Lawrence’s Dior footsteps and continuing her color-rich red carpet run, Nyong’o showed up to the 2014 BAFTA Awards in a strikingly green and belted gown from the Parisian design label.

Short and Sweet: Jennifer Lawrence

Even when J. Law ditches her high-fashion, formal gowns for shorter (but still chic) dresses — like this Proenza Schouler number she wore to a Hunger Games: Catching Fire press event in Rome — the actress manages to look edgy and beautiful all at once.

Nyong’o is no stranger to more casual dresses on the red carpet, and she looked especially chic in this blue and orange number from Vivienne Westwood at a recent Q&A with the Dalai Lama.

One-Hued Wonder: Jennifer Lawrence

Nyong’o may have made the minimal, monochromatic look her thing this awards-show season, but Lawrence gave the rising star a run for her money at the Catching Fire premiere in Paris with this sleek black Christian Dior Couture dress.

Even with cutouts and V-shaped straps, Nyong’o nailed her signature minimal style at the 2014 Critics’ Choice Awards in an all-white Calvin Klein gown.

Cool and Cropped: Jennifer Lawrence

Crop tops may be run-of-the-mill at this point, but an alarming number of celebrities fail to pull them off properly. Fortunately, Lawrence wasn’t one of them at a movie premiere in Madrid, revealing just a peek of skin in her futuristic, two-piece Alexander McQueen ensemble.

Showing off her super-toned abs and a polished midi pencil skirt, Nyong’o proved that she, too, can nail the crop top style in this Giambattista Valli ensemble at the 2014 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon.
