You've Gotta Try The New Starbucks Granitas

by Kathryn Kattalia

When it comes to finding a frosty cool-down treat in the summertime, you already know that Starbucks is your go-to (hello, Frappuccinos). Now, there's even more reason to head to your local 'Bux in the afternoon when it's hot out — Starbucks Granitas are here as part of the coffee chain's new limited time Sunset Menu available exclusively after 3 p.m., and they come in three pretty amazing flavors. Depending on what kind of mood you're in, choose from the Starbucks Caramel Espresso Granita, the Teavana Youthberry White Tea Granita, or the Starbucks Strawberry Lemon Limeade Granita. And, before the summer is over, make sure you've given each of them a try — I can tell you first-hand that these new menu additions are delicious.

But before I get ahead of myself, you might be wondering to yourself what the heck a granita even is. Starbucks describes its new drink as "subtly-sweetened finely-shaved ice topped off with bold espresso, white tea, or refreshing lemonade," depending on what flavor you end up choosing. Basically, it's kind of like the shaved ice you used to get when you were a kid, only way more sophisticated because there is coffee or tea involved.

The beverages are part of Starbucks' new Sunset Menu, and will be available at participating Starbucks stores starting at 3 p.m. every day for a limited time starting June 14. The afternoon menu also includes a Chocolate Brownie Trifle and a Strawberry Shortcake Trifle too, in case you fancy a bite to go along with your Granita. They both look pretty incredible, TBH:

But let's get back to Granitas, shall we? Because we have three new drinks on our hands here, people, and I want to break each of them down so that we all know exactly what we're working with. Here's how the new flavors compare:

1. Caramel Espresso Granita

Frappuccino lovers, this is a twist on your old favorite. Starbucks tops sweetened "finely-shaved ice" with espresso shots, a bit of cream, and caramel drizzle for a refreshing Granita that also packs a bit of a punch — a 12 oz. order of the Caramel Espresso Granita contains 75 mg of caffeine.

2. Teavana Youthberry White Tea Granita

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the Instagram opportunities here, guys? Lemonade-flavored shaved ice makes up the base of this Granita. Then, Teavana Youthberry White tea is poured over it, bringing with it flavors of pineapple, hibiscus, and acai.

3. Starbucks Strawberry Lemon Limeade Granita

This one also comes with a lemonade-flavored base, only this time it's blended with strawberries. Instead of tea, it's poured over with house-made limeade, which sounds just about as delicious as they come.

You're intrigued, right? The drinks cost between $3.45 and $4.25, depending on what kind you get and where you live. But between June 14 and June 26, if you go into Starbucks in the morning to get your regular pick-me-up and then head back in the afternoon after 3 p.m. with your receipt, you can get a Granita for $3. Pretty much, there's no reason not to give it a try. Your weekly Frappuccino rotation has been looking for a little mix-up, anyway.
