Dries Van Noten Fall 2014: Dizzying, Cold-Weather Resort Wear
Say it with me now: "W-E-A-R-A-B-L-E." There was hardly a conceptual look to be seen at Dries Van Noten's Paris show, so, uh, has anyone seen my credit card? Every look was street-ready, and with all the 3D flowers, louche sequins, and bright, hibiscus-y prints, it felt like the type of collection we'd pack for a cruise — but plenty of dark furs and heavy coats kept it all very winter appropriate. Van Noten was inspired by Bridget Riley, a British artist obsessed with optical illusions, which led to mesmerizing striped patterns and the occasional sunburst-like swirl of yellow. All very perfect for lounging about beneath a winter sun.

Candy-like illusions, flowers, and peplum are restrained by short hair and heavy black eyeshadow. Well, sorta restrained.

It’s all very somber until you stare at the skirt for 30 seconds.

No corporate drone would wear an optical illusion on their blazer…would they?

All eyes on me, or at least on one side of me.

We’d rock that pin on the deck of a cruise ship any day.

This is what we’d wear to the ship’s Dining Room, after a long day spent staring icily at anyone who looks twice at our hibiscus pin.

Too somber for weddings, too wild for funerals. Better wear it to the club.

The sparkles say Night, but the flower says Day, Day, Day.
