If you're familiar with the work of comedy trio The Lonely Island, it will come as no surprise that their new movie Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is absolutely hilarious. The film, in theaters June 3, is an inspired satire of music documentaries and the music industry in general. Popstar also has many of the same elements that make the group's digital shorts so funny, such as songs with ridiculous lyrics, visual jokes, and some surprising appearances by superstars. Seriously, there are so many celebrity cameos in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping that it's almost hard to keep track.
In some ways, it seems inevitable that the new movie would feature a lot of stars; The Lonely Island has consistently recruited A-listers for all of their major music videos. Also, all three members of the group used to work at Saturday Night Live (Jorma Tacoone and Akiva Schaffer were writers, while Andy Samberg was a writer and cast member), so they clearly have a ton of connections through that network. But there's also some irony in the fact that there are so many celeb cameos in the movie given that it's a parody on the very industry in which all of these people work. Basically, Popstar uses its main character Conner to poke fun at a celebrity-obsessed culture while also containing many of the celebrities that people are obsessed with. The whole thing is very meta and utterly hilarious. Here are some of the stars who make memorable appearances in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Spoilers ahead!
