This Celebrity Breakup Is A Shocking One

It sounds like a sad day for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. According to TMZ, Heard reportedly filed for divorce from Depp on Monday, less than a year and a half after the couple wed in February of 2015. According to the gossip site, Heard has cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce. Sadly, the alleged split comes on the heels of the death of Depp's mother, who Entertainment Tonight reports passed away on May 20. Bustle has reached out to Depp and Heard's reps, but has not heard back at this time.

Depp and Heard's romance reportedly began shortly after the couple met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2010. Depp and Heard were playing love interests in the Hunter S. Thompson adaptation, and reportedly began dating on the down low in real life as well. However, their first bout of dating seemingly didn't last. Though Depp did reportedly name a beach on his island after Heard in 2012 (casual), Heard was spotted with French model Marie de Villepin in Paris in early 2013, and rumors swirled that she had ditched Depp for the daughter of the former French Prime Minister. If Heard and de Villepin were a romantic unit, that romance seemingly fizzled fairly quickly. Heard was spotted holding hands with Depp at a concert in April of 2013. Rumors swirled that the couple was engaged early in 2014, and in March of the same year Depp (who was rocking an engagement ring on his finger during his Transcendence press tour) confirmed that he and Heard were, in fact, getting married. In February of 2015, the pair did: Heard and Depp married in a civil ceremony at Depp's home before heading to Depp's private island for a second ceremony.

In 2015, rumors bubbled up that stated that Heard and Depp were on the rocks, just months after their official wedding ceremony. Though Heard told Marie Claire that those rumors hurt her and that they "misrepresented" the lives of her and her husband, it now seems that the couple is indeed splitting up. Though we won't know the true state of Heard and Depp's relationship until the parties confirm their split, the reports are certainly sad.
