How To Make Sure Your Graduation Cap Stays On

by Sienna Fantozzi

It's that time of the year again — graduation! If this is your year to put on that cap and gown and get your diploma, you're probably pretty stoked — but you want to make sure your cap actually stays on. There are a few clever ways to make your graduation cap stay on, because the last thing you want is it flying in your face when you're accepting your diploma, or ruining all the pictures your parents are snapping. Not cute.

I think we can all agree there's nothing all that stylish about graduation garb, but since we have to wear it, it might as well be worn correctly, right? Unfortunately, the struggle of making sure that cap stays on is real. It's troublesome enough if you're just sitting or walking around inside, but if your ceremony is outside, add in any wind and you're basically done for. But no worries, there are some ways to make sure it stays on (that is, until you're ready to yank it off and throw it in the air) so that any potential disaster is avoided. Your graduation should go as flawlessly as possible! School was hard enough, for reals.

Here are five clever ways to make you cap stay on:

1. Wear Your Hair Down

This one won't keep the cap secure on it's own, but you have to start with the right foundation. Wear your hair down or in a low ponytail — you want to avoid any style that will push up on the cap, like an up-do.

2. Use Hairspray

Spray your hair with hairspray or texturizing spray before you put the cap on, because it will give your hair a little bit of extra hold to keep the cap on. Freshly washed, shiny and smooth hair looks beautiful — but it's a recipe for that cap sliding off.

3. Try Bobby Pins

Bobby pin the cap to your hair to help it stay in place. If you want to keep them incognito, use bobby pins the same color as your hair.

4. Angle It Correctly

Don't place the cap too far back on your head, because you risk it falling off. Try to keep it perpendicular and flat on top of your hat.

5. Put A Headband Inside

Sew or tape a headband inside your hat, then wear your headband as normal. This tutorial will walk you through how to do it.
