Angelina Jolie Pitt Is No Fan Of Trump

by Rosie Holden Vacanti Gilroy

The list of celebrities who are against a Donald Trump presidency is long, and ever growing. In fact, it's always a surprise when anyone from Hollywood comes out in support of the presumptive GOP nominee (I'm looking at you, Caitlyn Jenner). Therefore, it's no huge shock that actress-turned-filmmaker,Angelina Jolie Pitt spoke out against Trump, condemning the candidate's xenophobia. Jolie Pitt's understandable fear of a Trump presidency makes sense, considering the actress' humanitarian work. Business Insider reports that Jolie Pitt was campaigning to promote worldwide unity in the face of the refugee crisis when she condemned Trump and his viewpoints, thoughtfully using her influence to address the gravity of a President Trump.

At a BBC event in London on Monday — at which Jolie Pitt was Special Envoy to the High Commissioner at the UN Refugee Agency —Jolie Pitt responded to a question about Trump's policy on Muslims, saying:

To me, America is built on people from around the world coming together for freedoms, especially freedom of religion. So it's hard to hear this is coming from someone who is pressing to be an American president.

Trump's stance on Muslims, in particular, promotes the opposite of "coming together for freedoms," instead denying rights to certain people on the basis of their religion. As Jolie Pitt's work to fight the refugee crisis proves, this is not a time during which the world should be divided.

Luckily, Jolie Pitt is not alone in Hollywood, many other actors are working hard to fight a Trump presidency. Not only are celebrities seen as role models, but many Hollywood actors are wealthy and have a lot of funds to pour into anti-Trump campaigns.

According to Business Insider, George Clooney is one such actor vehemently opposing Trump — just like Jolie Pitt, Clooney is extremely opposed to Trump's proposed ban on Muslims in America. Clooney is using his wealth and influence to ensure that Trump's democratic opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is the next president of the U.S. — the actor has held big-donor fundraisers for the candidate in L.A.

At the renown Cannes Film Festival last week Business Insider reported that, Clooney promised that Trump will not win the presidency, saying:

There is not gonna be a President Donald Trump. It’s not gonna happen. Fear is not going to be something that drives our country. We’re not going to be scared of Muslims or immigrants or women.

Some may argue that celebrities' opinions shouldn't matter to the American voter, and that activists, intellectuals, and politicians should inform voters' opinions. However, when celebrities like Jolie Pitt or Clooney thoughtfully share their political beliefs — and in the case of Trump, these beliefs are certainly moral, not just political — it cannot do anything but help engage voters in the election. Celebrities do have excessive influence, and Jolie Pitt and Clooney prove that such influence can be used for good: Trying to stop Donald Trump from ever becoming the President.
