This Video Will Restore Your Faith In Humanity

by Emma Cueto

After this nightmarish polar vortex of a winter, I think we can all agree that being cold is awful. So seeing a video of an 11-year-old boy shivering on a bus stop bench in the snow, without a coat or gloves or a hat, is about enough to break your heart. Especially since this is happening in Oslo, Norway where the average winter high is 30 degrees Fahrenheit. But then you see what happens next.

This hidden camera experiment was filmed by Norwegian charity SOS Children's Village as part of their winter campaign. The group, which is currently working to help children is Syria, is right now to looking to send much-needed coats and blankets to help Syrian children get through the winter. The video project is one way they're hoping to raise awareness.

"People should care as much about children in Syria as they care about this boy," Synne Rønning, the information head of SOS Children's Villages Norway, told The Local. And indeed, most of the bystanders do come to the aide of the boy on the bus stop, who was a volunteer and was never in any real danger. All too many children in Syria, though, are in danger from cold, because even though the country isn't as cold as Norway, nighttime temperatures in the winter can and do dip below freezing and many homes have lost heating capabilities.
