Tyrion Is Fit For The Iron Throne On 'GoT'

by Molly Freeman

Game of Thrones is exactly the kind of twisty, complicated series that just begs fans to come up with elaborate theories about how the whole thing will end. One theory put forth by fans states that Tyrion is secretly a Targaryen rather than a Lannister, and will help Daenerys conquer Westeros on the back of her dragons. Of course, it would also mean he's in line for the Iron Throne. So, here's my theory on why Tyrion must be a Targaryen because, really, it's the best thing for the entirety of Westeros.

First off, let's refresh ourselves on the whole "secret Targaryen" theory: Basically, it states that Tyrion is the son of the Mad King and Tywin's wife Joanna Lannister, which would explain why Tywin hated Tyrion. Plus, Tyrion's connection with dragons and the description of his appearance in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series seems to be more in line with the Targaryens than the Lannisters. So then, if this theory turns out to be correct, it leads into another for the end of the series, which states that Daenerys will re-conquer Westeros on the backs of her dragons — with the help of Jon Snow (who would have Targaryen blood if R + L = J is true) and Tyrion.

However, that theory also seems to imply that Daenerys would be the one to sit upon the Iron Throne after all is said and done, but I think Tyrion may be better suited to rule. Here's why:

He Has Experience

Sure, at this point in Game of Thrones, both Daenerys and Jon Snow have experience being in charge of other people. But Tyrion has the most experience helping to rule Westeros since he spent so much time as the Hand of the King while Joffrey was still alive. Plus, let's be honest, he was actually very good at ruling when he was the Hand. Certainly, after Joffrey and Tommen, Westeros could use a king with some experience.

He's Level Headed

One of Tyrion's main character traits is that he's clever and he usually thinks things through (there are some exceptions). It has helped keep him alive this long, and it could certainly prove to make him a great king. After the Mad King, Robert Baratheon and the two young kings, Westeros is in need of someone clever to lead the way, someone who can look at the big picture and figure out what's best for everyone. I believe that someone is Tyrion.

It's In His Blood

If the theory about Tyrion's parentage turns out to be true and he is a Targaryen, then he has a right to the Iron Throne. Technically, his claim isn't as strong as Daenerys' since he would be the bastard son of the Mad King rather than a legitimized heir. But if Targaryen blood is needed to rule Westeros, then he would definitely qualify in that regard.

So, it might not have been confirmed on Game of Thrones that Tyrion is a Targaryen, but I've got my eye on the end of the series already, and Tyrion would make a great ruler for Westeros. Will that actually happen? We'll have to wait and see whether this theory, and all the others, turn out to be true when Game of Thrones concludes. Until then, I'll be watching each episode in Season 6 closely to see if it helps or hurts my theory.
