Selena Makes A Statement About Bieber On Stage
If you have followed Selena Gomez at all for the past few years, you know that the name of a certain ex-boyfriend is always closely lurking nearby. Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have been inextricably linked since the two began dating as young teenagers way back in 2011, and the saga of these two continues. Sure, they've had their on and off moments and posted photos that have teased Jelena fans, but it is about time we leave their relationship in the past, and Gomez seems to be 100 percent committed to doing so. During the Fresno stop of her Revival Tour this past weekend, Gomez reportedly spotted a "Marry Justin" sign in the crowd and proceeded to grab it and crumble it while still onstage, according to Just Jared.
I applaud Gomez for gaining confidence in the past few months and really making her stance on talking about Bieber become known. She hasn't minced her words in the past about how "over" she was talking about her ex, and this small act during her show is powerful. Gomez is headlining her very own and highly successful tour. There's no need to even bring up Bieber whether you're a fan of Gomez's at her show or a reporter. This is Gomez's journey and accomplishment; not his.
I cannot imagine how it must feel for a young woman in the entertainment industry like Gomez to always have an ex-boyfriend's name brought up when speaking about her career. It undermines her own talent. Gomez spoke up about this fact in the recent June 2016 issue of Marie Claire. She said,
I would try to promote something that I loved, and the entire interview would be about my personal life... I would leave a room feeling defeated, feeling embarrassed, but I would always make sure to put that smile on my face because I wasn't going to let them get to me.
It is obvious that slowly and surely, Gomez is coming into her own as a woman and owning her decisions, and her fans should be respectful of this fact.
She also recently shared that she won't be singing "The Heart Wants What It Wants" on tour, a song which is obviously very much about Bieber. She told Elle in 2015 that she wanted her November 2015 AMA performance of the song to be the last time she spoke (or sang) about this relationship.
She told Entertainment Weekly before the kick off of her Revival tour about her decision to not perform "The Heart Wants What It Wants,"
There are things that I can't do. I won't be performing this on this tour because I don't want to. It's like when you smell a scent and it takes you back to a place that maybe wasn't the best place. That stuff is a little bit more difficult.
This is probably the most telling detail as of late. I applaud Gomez for owning her feelings and finding strength of her individual decisions, especially when it comes to her music and her career. She cares about making the Revival Tour the best environment for herself and her fans. She wants to leave her past in the past, and with this positive outlook, she seems to finally be on a true path of revival — in every sense.
