Tobey Maguire Reacts To The New Spider-Man

by Michelle Lulic

Spider-Man fans have been on one crazy, heart-wrenching ride over the past 15 years. We have been introduced to a total of three different on-screen portrayals of Spider-Man: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and, most recently, Tom Holland. Personally, it's been hard to get attached to any of the actors involved, because it seemed inevitable that we could soon lose yet another amazing character portrayal. However, Tom Holland's recent introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War might allow fans to relax a little bit. Not just because of a pretty stable contract of future movies in the MCU, but because Tobey Maguire approves of Holland's Spider-Man, and isn't that all the reassurance that fans need?

Whether you're Team Tobey, Team Andrew, or Team Tom, odds are the only thing you want for the beloved Marvel character is peace. Peace and, you know, a steady actor portraying the character, so we can stop with the reboots already. When the Spidey's get along, it makes my heartache from the effects of the past 15 years ease just a little bit. Just take a look at Tobey Maguire's hilarious and touching Instagram video tribute for yourself, and try to not get emotional.

The video itself was not created by the 2002 Spider-Man actor, but Maguire assured fans that he approved of it — and Holland's performance — with caption and tag: "Haha seriously, who made this? @tomholland2013 good job! You are great as Spider-Man. Keep it up!" If that's not a ceremonial way of passing the torch, then I don't know what is.

However, this is not the first time that Tobey Maguire has proudly passed on the character. Andrew Garfield confirmed in a BBC News interview in 2010 that he received the actor's blessing as well upon getting cast in the role. "[Maguire] sent me a lovely message through a mutual friend. He gave me his support, and it meant a great deal, of course, because part of the reason I love and have continued to love this character was because of his portrayal," said Garfield, "To step into those shoes is no mean feat. It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I’m thankful.”

Upon the casting news, Garfield had nothing but love for Holland as well. "It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor. He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor. And [he's] a dancer, so his body’s the right [form]," said Garfield according to Moviepilot.com. "I’m just really excited to just be a [Spider-Man] fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it."

Moral of the story: It is just one giant love fest between the three different Spider-Men. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
